Hi, I'm a 69 year old guy who has been collecting ancient coins since I was 10. I still have my first two I purchased, a Gallienus and Salonina. I now primarily collect coins of Claudius II, attempting to obtain all obverse and reverse variations. I also collect Exakta cameras, wrist watches, antique clocks and antique American firearms from 1850-1890 with a focus on Merwin and Hulbert revolvers. Here is a link to a short video on Merwin and Hulbert:

My other interests include photography, baroque music, vacations in Cannon Beach Oregon, and most importantly, my cat pals. That's Truffles on the left, and Tequila on the right. I'd say a lot of us on the forum love our cats.

I write, read, play music and teach. Okay, maybe a bit more detail would not be a bad thing. I grew up reading. I was a precocious reader which just means I learned to read without any formal instruction. I was just over the age of 3 when the family stories say I just started reading everything around me and in more than one language LOL. The reading has not stopped. During my undergrad in English I fell in love with Middle English and Anglo Saxon. I have not read any Anglo Saxon in a number of years but I do thumb through my Chaucer (in the original dialect of course) every month or so. I studied a few other dead languages over the years and enjoyed it immensely. I went on to complete several degrees and ended up teaching at a university. I have taught at a university in various capacities for the last couple of decades. I started off in a faculty of education which included graduate and undergraduate courses. I then spent ten years in a department of applied linguistics. I am now preparing to teach again for the faculty of education. While in person I can be a bit shy from time to time that all changes when you put me in front of a few hundred people in a classroom. That is where I really come to life.

I love the coins for the history. I have always been a reader and collecting these coins has led me to some very interesting reading. Besides coins I also play the guitar quite often. I have played a musical instrument since I was a kid. I grew up in an area of Canada where everyone I knew played at least one instrument and sometimes 5-6 of them. I started off playing a Glockenspiel and went on to try other instruments over the years. I used to play with a few bands but now I usually play alone. Still trying my had at songwriting and I have seem ideas I am working through.

As @lordmarcovan mentioned above there is a connection between modern rock and classical music. Here is an example. Listen to the first pieces for a minute of 2 and then listen to the second. There are more examples of course. The story is Paul McCartney was practicing Bach on the guitar and came up with Blackbird.

if you do not have the patience start at about the 2:40 mark of the first video.

Supposedly there is a swimming hole back in the creek somewhere, but since we just bought the house in october of last year I haven't been able to wade the creek yet to find it.

Wow, I've been staring at this photo. This is so frikkin cool!! What is the magnification? How did you stain it? Why are there no other species. I thought our mouths were literally dirtier than sewers when it came to the sheer number of different bugs per any given volume. Maybe the staining only highlights this one type of bacteria?

I'm Rasiel, an aging gen X'er who's mostly into Roman imperial coins (coins being just one of like 600 other hobbies). I've traveled all over the world and hope to retire to do nothing but travel and have fun. And maybe finish that next book in between traveling and having fun ;- )

This is me about an hour ago along with my wife. We look like we're about to go rob a train in the old West! Resized_20200605_143440.jpeg

wxcoin Getting no respect since I was a baby

Since I don't get any respect I'll go ahead and say a little about myself; then the no respect will be earned. I would like to tell you that I was dropped on my head when I was born but that wouldn't be true. I was raised by loving parents who probably didn't get enough respect from myself and 5 siblings. I got interest in collecting coins when I was in junior high. A classmate collected Lincoln cents and a light bulb went off in my head and hasn't burned out yet; it's flickered a few times though. During high school I bought some US proof sets after I started working part time. I also went to the bank and got some cent rolls to look through. I was lucky to find a 1906 IHC in the first roll I ever searched through (I believe it was in 1970). By the time I started college I had to put coin collecting on the back burner; beer and Jaycees became my top priority (I was too ugly to chase women. Well I could chase them but I was too slow to catch them). In the meantime I got my undergraduate and graduate degrees in meteorology; talk about no respect! My first professional job was in Rapid City, SD and I bought a couple coins to jump start my coin collecting again. However, I had too many other irons in the fire and coin collecting never got to the level I wish it had. Over the next few decades I got married, had a son, changed jobs and location (Omaha, Austin, Rapid City again, and then Norman OK). Most of my career was weather radar research and development. The last 20 years was at the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

During the time in Oklahoma I got divorced (no respect, no respect at all), built my own house not too far away from Joe Exotic's zoo (I get the shivers today thinking that was the community I was living in), and retired. Since I love the outdoors and 4 seasons I made it a point to move to the north woods of Wisconsin, where, as a kid growing up in northeast IL, I always dreamed of owning a house in the woods.

My interest in coin collecting really ramped back up after my divorce. My first focus was on modern registry sets but after a while I sold most of my collection to purchase my north woods home. My current interests are 19th century type coins and family birth year sets. However if I see a coin I like that isn't part of what I normally collect, I'll buy it. Probably my favorite US series is the 3CN. I've always had a goal of building a complete 3CN set; both MS and proof. To achieve that goal I may need to cut back on bowling, Spotted Cow and Dewers; nah, that ain't gonna happen.

I use the CT name of wxcoin; "wx" is an acronym for weather and "coin" is an acronym for coin. Since I've been on CT people have called me Rodney; you can see why. So, for the sake of this thread, I'll reveal my true identity for a 1916 SLQ and a donut (I love donuts).

    Hi Suarez,
I know it seems hard to see but there are at least two different genus’s of bacteria in those pictures. The thicker cocci( circles) are likely a Staphylococcus species, while the thinner lancet shaped cocci in chains are likely Streptococcii. Of the strep in the picture there are likely many different species that can’t be differentiated by a microscope.
I did a standard gram stain without heat fixing and read the glass slide at 100x with oil.

Human mouths are pretty nasty, our oral bacteria has evolved with us to break down many complex carbohydrates and starches. The bad thing about that is when the bacteria break down those things they release acidic byproducts that lowers the PH of the surrounding area which degrades the tooth enamel and that eventually leads to tooth decay.

Fun fact, if you ever wake up in the morning and your breathe smells somewhat like bleach then it’s likely due to this little guy!

    TIF Always learning.

My name isn't Tiffany. TIF is an acronym for This Is Fun, my first coin forum user name. Until recently I spent so much time on this board that I began to think of myself as Tiff, to the point of turning and saying "Yes?" when someone says "Hey Tiffany", as happened often in my old office. Kinda embarrassing! :D

My coin collecting story has been recounted here before so I'll just link it:

    https://www.tifcollection.com/how-i-became-interested-in-ancient-coins

It has now been several years since I updated the website .

I haven't been very active on CT since the big move back to the States in December. Thought I'd have more time... nope. Less spare time. I'm hoping to free up some coin time soon though. I miss you people, CoinTalk, and coins!

    As for who I am:

    • Jack of all trades, master of a few :D
    • Physician (surgeon)
    • Craftaholic
    • Musician, although I haven't been doing much of that in the last decade or so.
    • Avid reader
    • Never married, never particularly wanted kids. Grandkids sound okay though :D
I've refrained from posting pictures of myself all these years but what the heck.

I spent my entire youth as a math nerd (way before that word ever came into vogue) and then completely avoided working by spending 8+ years in college getting BS degrees in physics and electrical engineering and lastly an MSEE. At that point I had lots of degrees but no money so unfortunately I finally had to get an actual job.

I ended up working directly and/or indirectly for the Air Force designing, testing and upgrading systems which I won't go into detail about. That lasted 34 years until I retired a few years back.

As I've collected ancients for over 25 years it kind of just fell into place to be an ancient coin online seller and have a table at local shows here in Orlando, which I've been doing for the last few years. BTW, I normally don't tell people this but if you come to my table you need to speak up a bit as there were one or two times range testing at the base didn't go as planned, and basically my hearing sucks.

I have been at CT since 2017, and I was so centered in trying to attribute and organize my coins that I forgot to introduce myself at that time - my apologies for being so rude.:sorry:

My name is Chris, (short for Christiane) and when I first registered at CT, my keyboard was playing crazy and I did not realize that the "t" was missing from my CT name, which once registered was impossible to correct. That is why my CT name is cmezner.
A little bit of myself: married for 42 years, one daughter with son-in-law, one granddaughter :)
I was a lecturer and researcher in Computer Sciences, and retired in 2007 when our granddaughter was born.

My parents were Sudeten Germans. After WWII they were "displaced persons" (i.e. stateless). My dad, since his youth, was a passionate coin collector mainly of Greek coins and Roman coins, in particular Augustus' coins, and coins up to the third century; he also had a few byzantine and medieval coins as well as some Austro-Hungarian (some of them are at my gallery under Austria Hungary). He called these coins "baptism coins" as they were gifts for a newborn.

My dad's family was very large and had been in Bohemia for centuries. My paternal grandmother was Jewish. Even though she converted to Catholicism when she married my grandfather, it did not exempt her from the Nuremberg Laws. Most of my dad's family members either committed suicide or were deported to Auschwitz. On the other hand, the family of my mother was expelled from Bohemia and my parents at first tried to start a new life in Germany but in 1950 they emigrated to South America, Venezuela.

I love to mention that an American GI helped my parents to escape in an US Army Jeep, from, at that time the Republic of Czechoslovakia: my dad was wearing the uniform of an American soldier and my mom was rolled up in a carpet. The American GI and my dad kept in touch for many years, and I know his first name: Norman.

My avatar is the Coat of Arms of Tachau (nowadays Tachova), a small city in Bohemia were my mother and her family were from.
My dad passed away in 1997 and I inherited his collection. I have to say that during his lifetime I did not pay much attention to his collection. To make a very long story short, the coins were stored as he had left them during many years.

Our daughter, she is a physician at Cook County, came to the US in 2003 to specialize in Internal Medicine; she met a wonderful guy and they married in 2006. In 2007, our granddaughter was born and my husband and I moved to the US and became US citizens in 2012. Of course we brought with us (in several trips, but this is another long story) my fathers collection and stored them in a safe deposit box. At first, my idea was to give them away to the local museum; two of their numismatists came, saw the collection, apparently had no interest and I guess that, now that I know a bit more, they must have been shocked because the coins were all stored together without coin flips in the deposit box. Actually, they were very nice and sent me a lot of coin flips to store them.

Moving forward to 2017: we decided that we should at least try to identify and organize the collection. I knew absolutely nothing about numismatics, and I still don't know much. That was when I registered at CT and at the German numismatic forum, and since then, with the big help of the members, and of course using websites, I have been able to attribute my dad's coins. I also started to buy coins that I think my dad would like to have.

Apart from coins, I have always loved to go to flee markets and collect things, stamps, empty matchboxes, postcards, textiles, Delft porcelain among others. I was also responsible for organizing the German community flee market that is (or was) held each year at Christmas time in Caracas. Nowadays, I volunteer at a local shop that is like a huge flee market.

Other hobbies: read:), classical music including operas:cool:, learn languages:confused:, exercise, research my ancestry.

My granddaughter and myself, Summer 2018, when we were enjoying 2 weeks with her in Florida: (I have no more recent pictures of myself :D)
