I've got three Byzantine AE's, that are just screaming for an identification (they've been in my drawer for quite a while): 29 mm, 9.51g 19 mm, 1.46g 22mm, 2.20g I would greatly appreciate any tips, or insights.
Top is this under type overstruck by possibly another Constantine X? Constantine X 1059 to 1067 AD AE Follis, Constantinople Obvs: +ЄMMANOVHΛ IC XC, Christ on footstool holding gospels. Revs: +KωN T ΔK ЄVΔK AVΓO, Eudocia and Constantine holding labarum. 26x28mm, 5.3g Ref: Sear 1853
Thanks David, for your input. I notice a relative large weigh difference between your (5.3g) and mine (9.51g) specimen. Is such a difference common in the Byzantine coinage? Also, I would greatly appreciate any input on the other two coins, if at all possible given their condition.
Byzantine AE can be all over the place for many types, so the weight is not an issue or an indication of difference. You can try researching scyphates including Latin imitations. They were made for at least three centuries and there can be hundreds of varieties. I made a thread on them.
