    Much better design.

Buildings are hard to execute on medals and coins without making them look dull.

What is really kind of sad is the changes they made him do converted it into almost a copy of one of the losing designs (on the losing design the lettering of FIVE CENTS was treated differently, other than that it was pretty much exactly like how the final design turned out.)

The mint also promised Schlag 200 proof nickels for a project he wanted to do....to give friends and family a souvenir of his award.
He ended up with less than half of what was promised....but still managed to obtain I believe around 100 to 125 proofs.
Which he had mounted and given away as a gift. DSCN4218.jpg

And I'm still looking! I moved about 15 yrs ago and some of my coin stuff is still buried I guess. Shame on me! But at least I am going through a lot of my collection and realize how badly I need to get more organized.

Yes, shame on you! But, in all honesty, you're not there only one who isn't organized!!! I've failed miserably at organization of my coins! Need to retire, so I can have more time for hobbies!!!

I haven't posted for a long time but I just got these things today at my local coin shop so I googled it and it brought me here.
I put the 2 coins on Ebay earlier today if any of the forum members are interested. Not sure if I'm allowed to say that ,but it looked like a few of you would be interested.
I have a really low starting bid because quite honestly I didnt think they were worth alot as the dealer didnt have much knowledge of them

Well I dont know what you paid for the pair, but it seems both you as well the LCS, are clueless as to there were only 1938 minted and slabed. At present I know of 1 set still not in tack....that said now < 1937 set may still exist.
And you're doing a no reserve auction? LOL
You as well the local coin shop need to research your finds a lot better.
These rarely come to sale unless a collector Passes and tne family sells the collection.
You may turn a profit from the price point you paid ,but you'll be leaving a lot on meat on the table for the buyer!

However since you copied my first post on this thread, and used it on ebay. To list your coins....you now need to research" copy rights" you can be sued...ya know?

That's funny that this post popped up in my search. I bought me a set of these a few years ago for $120. I was looking at them today and had noticed a defect in one of the dates. It looks like the die scraped off the coin after the FSNC-2002 was set. . Would probably had been a neat error if it was a real coin. Lol Here's my set.

Hi everyone, sorry to bring up an old thread.
I've been interested in purchasing one of these for about 2 years now, not the set necessarily, rather just one of the two.
right now I've been bidding on one (matte), we are at 70 at the moment.

is this the kind of thing with actual considerable interest? Or would I be buying something which merely is only a small premium over melt.

I saw the price points above, but those are much higher than what I've seen over the past few months, especially.

    let me know friends!
    Evan

    Hi Even,

If it’s a Matte Proof coin, it’s a problem. These sets were made with Brilliant Proof coins only, Brilliant Proofs were all the mint made in 1938.

I have not seen one of these sets offered for 7 or 8 years. The last one I saw, the dealer wanted close to $2,000 for it.

The pieces with the original design were made by a private company. I am not well versed on the value of this piece.

I bought my set for $120 back a few years ago. I see one set on ebay asking $575 for a set.

All the quotes I got from a dealer at the shows were very high. That’s why I passed.
