Hate to say it but I'll defend the mint on this one. The metals markets are so volatile lately that you don't know what it's going to be a week from now. Much less in a month. You don't know when they purchased their raw stock.

Who has more risk of losing the most? The consumer buying one or two gold coins for a little over spot or the mint selling thousands of them for less than they purchased their inventory at? I'm sure they are trying to stay comfortably in the black out of necessity.

If somebody feels the prices are too high, than just wait. The stuff will be out on ebay, slabbed, within a year and then you can probably buy it at less than issue price, if gold maintains or goes down. If it goes up, than their prices aren't too high right now.

I agree, it would be great if their prices were electronically linked and adjusted by spot price daily, but apparently, that is not possible. You aren't buying raw, unrefined, bullion. In a year or two, we may realize we should have been thankful for these prices. Who knows.

figures stated are for sales not mintages. right?. beside, it look like some figures in certain year were reverse and some one oz and 1/10 were the same. please recheck it.

Sales numbers are all that matter really. They are sales numbers as long as sales of the current year are still ongoing. But once sales stop, those sales numbers become mintage numbers.

The 2007 proof platinum numbers are off in the graph. Here is what they should be:

    2007 1 ounce 9268
    2007 1/2 ounce 5845
    2007 1/4 ounce 5824
    2007 1/10 ounce 8006

They sold more one ounce plats than 1/10 ounce plat proofs in 2007 which is unusual. The 2007 UNC numbers are correct to what I show.

Right now the low for the proof plat 1/10 is 2004 which is about 7161 coins [I have seen 6846 used as well]. So far in 2008 the mint has sold 1255 singles and 759 sets for 2014 total coins. That means if they have less than around 5000 coins left to sell the 2008 should be the new low mintage for these coins.

I would have to guess that they probably do but who knows. I think the sales numbers later this week will tell us a lot as to how low the mintages may be for these coins. The wild card are the 4 coin sets.

One other thing about the 2006 w UNC coins. I am pretty sure some of these coins were melted in the run up of platinum to over $2000 an ounce so the numbers may be sales but the survival numbers are probably less. I would expect the ounces to have been melted more than the 1/10 coins but still I think the survival of 2006 coins is lower than the stated sales. Also all of the earlier years were melted as well so how many are left for each is unknown. I still think it is close as to what will be the new low for these coins, 2004 for plat proofs and 2006 for UNC or the 2008 coins.

it looks like your 2008 unc (w) platinum sales figures were reverse. one ounce 599 and so forth. yours were reversed. your one ounce is 1,165 instead

Yes thanks, those are reversed but they will change tomorrow, and it looks like the 1/4 Plat UNC is probably sold out as it is already on backorder. Most collect the 1/10 and 1/4 so if anyone wants to buy those are probably the best options. The only ones left though are now the proof unless someone wants to see if the 1/4 UNC will still ship.

One thing about platinum is the drop in auto sales will most likelyl keep platinum prices down for a couple of years so sales of platinum coins should rebound next year. These 2008 coins the mint is losing a lot of money on selling, as they purchased the platinum at much higher prices if reports are correct. So if this happens then these 2008 coins should be the low for the next couple of years.

I know some predicted the 2006 w UNC and 2004 proof coins would probably be the lows forever but two years later we have these. Anyway tomorrow we will see more, I am still not convinced these are lower but it could be close.

Someone thinks these are the numbers that will be listed for tomorrow.

    2008 UNC

    1/4 615 sold out
    1/10 2046 sold out
4 coin sets 668 still available

    For comparison.

    2006 UNC

    1/4 700
    1/10 1700
    4 coin set 2000

So it looks like the 2008 1/4 is under 2006 and the 1/10 is over for singles. It appears the 2008 4 coin sets will determine the final low for this set so far.

Here are more accurate numbers for the 2006 and 2007 W UNC coins:

2006-W Burnished Platinum Eagle Mintage Figures

    Individual Combined
    1 Ounce 1,079 3,068
    1/2 Ounce 588 2,577
    1/4 Ounce 687 2,676
    1/10 Ounce 1,555 3,544
    4 Coin Set 1,989

2007-W Burnished Platinum Eagle Sales Figures

    Individual Combined
    1 Ounce 1,753 4,425
    1/2 Ounce 1,258 3,930
    1/4 Ounce 1,228 3,900
    1/10 Ounce 3,111 5,783
    4 Coin Set 2,672

The drop in platinum is now back to almost 2003 price levels and will probably go even lower from here. I think this is good and bad for this series. In the short-term the current proof platinum coins are selling for over $1300 per ounce which is 63% over current spot! I think it is easy for the 1/10 to sell out as they have with the UNC and perhaps the 1/4, but the 1/2 and full ounce will be tougher, then you have to add in the 4 coin sets. The sales of 4 coin proof sets may last into next year if platinum keeps dropping. I am guessing there were probably about 1000 UNC 4 coins sets left to sell and maybe 2000 proof sets left.

    overcharged

the mint is now overcharged 25% over its american eagle gold and buffalo series. gold recent low is $697.00. while one ounce of am eagle cost $1,119.95 and buffalo cost $1,059.95.

the mint also overcharged 20% over its platinum series. platinum recent low is $754.00 per ounce. the mint charged one ounce platinum at $1,214.95.

the mint should lower down the prices. the above is already included all the mark up the mint should get. but is still overcharged by 25% for gold and 20% for platinum.

Unfortunatley, the mint is not a bullion dealer. The price that they sell gold at is not based on market fluctuations. It's based on what they bought the raw gold at. When they started minting these coins, gold was $800+ an ounce. After the usual fabrication charge, their prices are where they should be. They are more a victim of the gold spike/crash than a predator.

    not fair

when the gold & platinum is up. they change and increase the prices. don't be fool to business men.

This looks like another 1995/1996 event that happened back then with the mint. If you look at that time the mint saturated the market with coins and most sales fell off as people gave up on collecting. If any time is like that it is today.

Next year should have much lower bullion costs so prices will drop, sales will go up and this will be a low mintage year. I am buying here.

    only $25.90 different

    gold $713.90

    platinum $739.00

different between gold platinum = $25.10

wow......as if said before. gold might price higher than platinum.

Don't worry, i think the chances are high platinum drops under gold. The good news is those that bought the 1/10 ounce UNC platinum coins 2008 W have already doubled their money as prices are rising for those coins.

    my guess

2008 silver bullion american eagle one ounce uncirculated dollar might pass 18,000,000 this year in total sales. while the gold one ounce uncirculated 50 dollar might hit 600,000 as well as 1/10 ounce at 350,000.
