I know not nice, not Datari but nice story: commemorate Hadrian visit to Egypt. Even Alexandria is kissing the hand of emperor!

Excellent post! Thanks you for the resources, I need to look up my 5 coins ex Dattari.

here's a tet that was unsold in the auction and I purchased at the opening bid of £40. 3 specimens known, and illustrated in rpc

Superb. I thought the write-up was some valuable pages picked up from the book " History of Numismatics". Here's a silver coin of Alexandria from my old folders. It was struck under Septimius Severus. RIC IV- 350 B.

    Hi @7Calbrey,

The Cologne reference (also seen as Köln) is Geissen's 5 volume set: Katalog alexandrinischer Kaisermünzen der Sammlung des Instituts für Altertumskunde der Universität zu Köln

    More info here.

We need to distinguish between the Alexandrian Provincials as listed in Emmett and the Alexandrian denarius mint covered (poorly) by RIC which includes coins like 7Calbrey's. The Victory types are not among the common ones but several variations exist. rf0370bb0224.jpg rf0380bb1416.jpg rf0390bb1124.jpg

The following bronze coin was struck in Alexandria under Ptolemy II to commemorate Alexander the Great. It's red color was initially included. Svoronos 467.

Fascinating presentation, @Ocatarinetabellatchitchix ! I like the black and white photo of him with his magnifying glass examining that gigantic pile of coins. His bushy mustache is hiding what must be a huge grin on his face.

Thanks @Deacon Ray . Dattari once wrote that over a million pieces passed through his hands during his career...

Ocatarinetabellatchitchix, Excellent article :D! That's a great photo of him looking at coins. I wonder if that pile of coins in front of him are part of his 25,000 + coin collection .

Another mystery, is Paolo Conte a reincarnation of Dattari ?

It's very difficult to find a copy. There were only 250 copies printed (mine is 49) and a lot are in libraries (university, museums, institutes, auction firms/dealers). I had to look regularly at online inventories and auctions, and ask around, for a long time before I found my copy. Make sure you get the 2007 and not the 1999 edition (you can usually find a 1999 if willing to pay $500-600), since 2007 includes about 700 more illustrations (I've found two of my coins in the Dattari-Savior 2007 "Supplement" plates that weren't in Dattari-Savio 1999.)

You may just have to wait until one comes up at auction. I would expect it to cost in the $300-400 (USD) range, but considering how useful and irreplaceable it is for provenance research, I could see people bidding it higher (I would have).

What I want to know is where I can buy: Giuseppe Figari & Massimo Mosconi’s 2017 Duemilla Monete della Collezione Dattari. Genoa: Circolo Numismatico Ligure "Corrado Astengo."

One of my coins from the 2007 Supplement only:
