@Orfew managed to obtain a rare coin from the collection of the late Philip Gysen when it was being dispersed in 2018. He shared it here and was rightlyproud of it. Some months on, having decided that it was out of place in his collection he has gifted it to me as a Probus specialist.

I was very touched by this very generous gesture and this coin takes a very special place in my collection.

Obv:- IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right, seen from back.
Rev:- CLEMENTIA TEMP, Emperor standing right, holding sceptre surmounted by eagle, receiving globe from Jupiter standing left, holding sceptre.
    Minted in Cyzicus, Q//XXI

    3.82 g. 21.62 mm. 180 degrees

From: The Phillipe Gysen Collection, who bought it in December 2016; Ex: Paul Francis Jacquier Auction #45 September 14, 2018; ex @Orfew collection.

Very cool. I am envious of that rare Probus. I don’t believe I have any with that bust type.

I have some of the Probus. Still learning though. Now I have another search to make. I wish I had started understanding them earlier in life. The subject coin here and the related transactions make great reading with all the quarantine time.

As a general rule, I wish we would post what it is about a super rare coin that makes it special rather than just giving the data as read from the coin. I am not a Probus specialist. Looking at the coin shown here I can not say why I would buy it if it if it turned up in a $1 junk bin. I discover that I have seven Clementia Probus coins each of which differs in some way from the one starting this thread. The one below is closest but I had attributed it to "Antioch?" based on what I knew in 1997 when I bought it. If I had owned the OP coin and decided to give it away, I would not have thought of offering it to a Probus specialist rather than to a YN or beginner in the hobby. That is why I wish we would add a 'how and why' to postings that say 'rare'.

    Doug,
The coin in question and the reasoning behing the scarcity was discussed here previously and I didn't want to bore the board with repeating it. Perhaps I should have inserted a link to the old thread, which I shall remedy now.

Thanks for the link. I continue to see no significant difference between d&c and cuirassed without drapery. To me, this approaches the level of flyspecking that I don't do even on my specialties. Do you see an intentional meaning attached to coins with one minor bust as opposed to another? This could be a date or message which would be recognized by the man on the street. Do you make similar separations between the many variations of armor shown on the military types other than the obvious ones like the inscribed shield? At what point do sets with too many members become just one? How many dies are required to establish a variation as opposed to just a whim of the cutter? It is certain that such a coin should belong in a specialist collection.

Nice gesture, I'm really impressed Sir !

Should you come accross some Dombes coinage, decide to buy them, and then discover they don't fit in your collecting themes, I'm your man :)

There are no drapes on these. They are cuirassed only seen from the rear.

Interesting coin. And I am continually surprised by the kindness of members. When I was starting out @Victor_Clark and @jamesicus both kindly sent me free coins. Kudos to both of them.

That Jacquier sale in 2018 was one of the most remarkable auctions in the last 10 years. It was so full of extraordinary specimens that some incredible coins fell through the cracks, like for instance this one, very rare and of a particularly beautiful series:

I have this Probus that I am still researching. It has "R thunderbolt Z" as a mint mark. I have not cleaned it yet. Probus R thunderbolt Z Obv.jpg Probus R thunderbolt Z Rev.jpg
