What an awesome collection your great-grandfather amassed. Is there a reason why the serial number is the same on all the notes in the uncut sheet? Shouldn't they have been numbered in sequence?

That's how that particular series of national currency was printed, as I understand it. The notes are each differentiated by what part of the printing plate they came from: A, B, C, D.

Later the printing plate position became a part of the serial number like on the small sized notes. The first letter on that series tells the position- A being top

I am not an US coins and notes collector, but this story and collection are awesome.

When did regional banks stop issuing legal tender?

This is the best one of these I’ve seen for a while. A very cool collection and family history.

I believe the last series of national currency was 1929. Thanks!

Hello kazuma78. I am new to all of this and was just checking out the site when I came across your story. I've been collecting "pocket change" for 2 or 3 years and, literally, just joined this sight about 25 minutes ago to see if I have some pennies worth dollars, you know? I read your story and was almost instantly hooked. I am a HUGE history buff and not once have I ever stopped to consider the history surrounding our nation's currency! And, as this was your great-grandfather, you made it so personally relatable! I wàs literally seeing your story in the little movie theater in my head! Curators at major museums struggle for years to express in the way you just did. It was utterly amazing. Thank you so very much for sharing that. I know I'm the new kid and my opinion doesn't really mean much, but I really enjoyed your post and hope to read more from you soon!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the comment! I am glad you enjoyed the information. Coins are incredibly fascinating because of their history and if you are just dipping your toes into coins, you should really read some of @johnmilton posts. His are incredibly historically interesting and great to read.

    Tah-dahh!

I am very honored to add this coin and its unbroken 111-year-old pedigree to my Eclectic Box collection. Thank you so much!

Furthermore, it did better at PCGS than my preliminary, conservative MS64 RB guess. :)

Thanks for adding that to my collection! :p

So who were the generations between him and you, that passed the coin(s) and currency on down the line?

After my great grandfather passed away, they sat in a safe deposit box until the early 2000s when my parents bought the rolls from the estate. I advised them to buy the coins and then helped them have some of them graded.

I often wonder what sorts of things have been sitting in SDBs for decades. After reading this thread, I'll be wondering even more. :)

Lots and lots of things. It's amazing to think of things we may consider rare, but may not actually be rare- they just haven't been re-discovered yet. I'm sure there are many things like that.

What a great story. This is what it's all about in my opinion. I've put a lot of stuff away that aren't worth a whole lot right now, but hopefully my great grandchildren will appreciate them.
