A big thank you to Haleiwa for directions to the CC Mint. Was only able to spend about a half hour there as the kids were extremely anxious to reach our final destination. Well worth the $5 it cost to go in!!! Just South of Reno, Nevada the mint is towards the south end of town right on the main street (HW-395) and across from the Golden Nugget (how appropo). Took many pictures and a few pictures here which I hope are okay to post. Bought a little something and I though there would be no collecting this trip. Quite honestly I didn't realize I would be driving right past it on our way to the mountains so bad planning on my part! I could have spent a few hours there as there was more to see than just the mint. The museum goes into mining, guns, and Nevada history. They were almost ready to start the coin press when I left . That would have been really neat to see and boy the questions I would have had!!! Hope you enjoy the photos! ~ Darryl
Here are a few more photos - There is much more to see here than is shown so I hope if you are ever in the area you stop in!!!
Did you get a chance to go out around back? Rumor has it that the mint workers would just toss the old dies out the window when they replaced them. Would be awesome to dig around that place with a metal detector.
Nice Photos Darryl. Historic places related to coins always excites me. Really wonderful place to visit and explore.
Thanks Darryl, for sharing your side trip with us. Great pictures! I have never had any reason to go to Reno, but now it seems quite probable. So, the coin in the capsule is your souvenir? Nice! That is a coin I would like as a souvenir... better than anything I have seen that other people have brought back. Somehow those machine embroidered satin pillows just don't have the same kind of appeal. jeankay
ROFL - I would have to say I agree... I'm glad everyone likes the photos. Carson City is about 30 minutes outside of Reno - easy drive if you are anywhere near there. Here is what I went for - (another couple hours drive) the fishing and hiking were unbelievable. I took this shot at about 9am on Wednesday morning as I fished with my son.
I went to carson city like 20 times when I was in the USA...didn't think to go to the mint . Next summer then I'll be sure to make the stop.
Awesome pics! Thanks for sharing. I just told my wife where we're going for vacation next year! :kewl:
another thread with soem awsome pics i can take vacations without leaving my home AND learn and share alot of money!!! just doesnt get any better
Thank You, - hope you like the shots in the general section! That's what vacations should be like - no cell reception no internet
I was there when I was a kid. I got some medals (copper I think) made on the coin press. I'll try to find one and post it...
Just got back from one of those myself. Great pics by the way. I've driven by the CC Mint I don't know how many times, but have never stopped for some reason. I think next time I might. Guy~
There's also a few antique shops and coin shops in the area. The one across the street and down from the Mint sold me a bunch of Seated liberty dimes for $1 each about 5 years ago. I bought about 100 of them. They're worth a minimum melt today at about half again as much as that now. But I sorted them all into coin books. All of them were between G8 and 20. A few were XF but common dates. Sure did fill in the blanks of my collection.
I saw the shop - wish I had time to go in! Maybe if we go there again I will plan to stay the night in CC before heading south. That way I can spend more time at the mint and visit the local coin shops. Thanks again!
Wow these pics are amazing. I'd really love to visit all of the past and present mints out there..*thinks up way to convince wife to go on a road trip*
lol - Have to wonder how long before the cops would show up and hall me away? Glad people are enjoying this thread, here are a couple more shots that include a little history. I left both shots a little bigger so that you can read the history. Enjoy!
