A copper plated steel cent. You used to be able to send your 1943 steel cent to a company to be copper plated. Kind of a gag thing. I've seen advertisements in old magazines for these.
I will throw this here too since OP made two threads... https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1943-copper-plated-steel-cent.346432/
Basically the copper 43's are all accounted for. Yes it's true one could "turn up". But the last one that turned up was in the family's possession for a few decades. All of the copper 43's you see now are either Chinese fakes, or altered coins. Yours looks like a steel cent that had some copper wash, which is now coming off.
I'm new to all of this so I'm basically know nothing about it just what I'm picking up from my searches trying to find information. Thank you all for your friendly opinions.
An authentic copper 1943 cent would be worth a fortune, so (as mentioned by @furryfrog02) people and companies would plate them with copper either as a novelty or to try and deceive others. I have a couple like yours. Still worth at least 1¢. Welcome to CT BTW.
Some of the copper been worn off do to use or chemical. Does not look natural. Check out this one and you can see the difference.
