These two sum it up for me. I once bought a few of these "unsearched rolls" from various sellers, and dumped lots of money. One of them I ended up befriending (before realizing it was a scam). I even visited him when I passed through his neck of the woods. He's a very kind old man who has MS and uses the proceeds from his online sales to pay for his medical bills. I'll say three things on this:
    1. I haven't talked to him since realizing it was a scam, because I prefer our relationship to have ended on a good note.
    2. I think this is incredibly dishonest, and that both the buyer and seller bear a part of the burden.
    3. I'm grateful to be in a position where I'm financially sound and don't have to take any moves necessary to generate income for my family. It's easy for me to judge these people (and I do), but part of me knows that if I had to post something like that to feed my family, I would.

I guess I would ask myself this question about the gentleman with MS. Does he think he's scamming people or oblivious about what he's doing? I've known people who seem incapable of comprehending what's moral/ethical.

You ever hear of an ebay seller named "abon" or "abon.com" or a TPG named SGS ? If you haven't heard of him, well you can read a little bit about him here -
    https://www.cointalk.com/threads/abon-coins-busted-must-read.249371/

But I'll help ya out a bit, make it short and sweet - and answer your question for ya. abon was probably the singles biggest rip off guy there ever was on ebay, when it comes to coins, or anyplace else for that matter.

But to answer your question specifically - even though every single sale he ever made on ebay was a rip off, and there were over 200,000 sales, the vast majority of his customers - were all repeat customers. With many of them buying hundreds of coins from him, one or two at a time ! And he had a 100% feedback rating !

And those gold plated coins I mentioned my previous in this thread. Every time that company comes out with another one of those, and they do it every year, year after year - a great many of the same folks buy 'em again.

So yeah, repeat customers, no problem. You can rob 'em blind and they'll still stand in line to let you rob them again.

This may not be the OP's specific auction, but the seller seems to be the same:

    510
***Auction Highlight*** Uncirculated Morgan Dollar Roll Old Steel Strong Wrapper 1889 & CC Ends (fc)
    Currency:USD Category:Coins & Paper Money Start Price:25.00 USD Estimated At:0.00 - 0.00 USD

Old Steel Strong Wrapper, Faintly Stamped Bankers Trust Company Of Philadelphia, Walnut St at Juniper

    SOLD
    1,250.00USD to floor+ (262.50) buyer's premium. + applicable fees & taxes.
    This item SOLD at 2019 Jul 22 @ 23:07 UTC-4 : AST/EDT

$1512.50 + tax for <$700 worth of coins - see what he did? (1889 + cc does NOT mean 1889 cc) - you can bet your bottom Morgan dollar (;)) the cc is one of the common ones, the 1889 P is the most common date & the rest of the roll are common AU dates as well.
Yet, mr. 'floor' swallowed the bait and paid double.
Rather than chasing grab bag dreams, take your coin money to a respected local coin shop and get a lot more (and better) for your $$.

I personally don't think the answer matters, because it's wrong either way...

I'm glad they were caught. If they sent a free donut with every order I may have been a repeat buyer.

I agree that it doesn't matter and is wrong either way. I didn't want to come across as giving him an excuse. I just wanted to point out that I've known people like that that don't think they've done anything wrong; in their mind.

I've seen the same. We even had a member here defending the seller... it makes me sad.

You are definitely correct. I'm not the least bit embarrassed. I did fall for it. Fortunately, I can afford to lose a little money. The main issue I have is about others who cannot. We know it's wrong. How does one put a stop to it?

Wow. This guy running the show thinks he's doing the right thing. Since we all agree this is wrong: is there any way to put a stop to it?

So. What coins did you actually receive?

Unfortunately, not really. You would have to sue the seller in court and demand proof the coins were co signed from the person they claim it was. That would cost way more than what you lost in your purchase, and I'm not even sure what the recourse is for false advertisement. Maybe an additional fraud charge?

Assuming that real fraud exists, you're probably doing all that you feasibly can by posting this thread on a forum filled with potential coin buyers. Word of mouth, or in this case word of type, often has underrated power.

Sadly, the coin-educated people here are probably the least likely to fall for something like this. How to reach others is difficult to determine.

I buy a lot of stuff from eBay and I’ve run into unscrupulous sellers who used bait and switch, altered photos and more to deceive me.

I’ve never lost a penny yet.

I file my complaints with photos and plenty of documentation. If I return the items they pay the shipping. Mostly I get my money back and am told to keep the stuff.

I skipped to the end of this thread because I've read things like this for many years. Ad Nauseum. For the love of God, when will you guys (and I don't mean all of you) stop getting skunked and snookered?

I buy a lot of things on eBay as well. I have one rule I stick to. The seller must have 100% rating and offer free returns. That alone tells you that they are on the up-and-up. A reputable seller will do whatever it takes to have no negative feedback.
