Did any CT members go to Numismata Frankfurt last week? https://www.numismata.de/en/frankfurt-2/ This is the only Numismata within driving distance of my place (500km total). I was glad to cross it off the wish list, but disappointed on the findings. “Target” – byzantines, some LRBs, Julia Domna denari. Inspired of what you guys write about the US fairs, I was expecting some decent pick bins, at least on the LRBs side. Well, there were (very) few junk bins instead, with just that – junk. After searching through all the garbage, got these, mostly not to leave empty-handed: Gallienus – GALLIENVS AVG / SOLI CONS AVG – Pegasus springing left Because I have always wanted a Pegasus coin, and Gallienus is one of the cheapest and closest solution for this, considering the “target”. Constantius II - DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG / FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO – Cyzicus mint (dot SMK epsilon) – Barbarian reaching, with Phrygian helmet, no beard To add to my FTR-FH collection Theodosius II - DN THEODO-SIVS PF AVG / cross - Cyzicus mint (SMKA) Because I am building a “bridge” between the LRBs, mostly former uncleaned, and the byzantines. This one has a readable legend and mintmark. Difficult to make a proper photo of such a small coin. And two anonymous folles – one class B, with an interesting overstrike on the reverse, and one class A2, type 11, which shows that dots are connected (see link below for type 11). Both battered, but both with enough details on the identification elements. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Anonymous Byzantine Class A Folles And one tetarteron of Alexius I – Sear 1929, with a nice reddish sand patina that needs to disappear before any photo will be taken, simply because I hate sand patina. With no exception, all the guys and ladies I asked about byzantines asked back if I was interested in gold coins. I will open a separate thread on fakes, because I became curious on the byzantine fakes after this experience. The guys at stands 1 and 317 had the Justinian I – NIK A – XII fake for sale. What was not so fun is that I asked them both if the coin is fake (already knew the answer) and both confirmed the coin is fake. Yet, both had the coins with a nice description and a price tag of 100+ EUR. Overall, I got some (interesting for me) junk, and will most probably not return next year.
I've done the same thing. Fortunately it's an inexpensive option to "nothing". Although, looks like you got 2 fairly nice specimens. Well, that's too bad, but understandable. Is that the standard for that show, or perhaps a "one time" issue?
I looked at the exhibitor’s list and counted at least 10 ancient coins dealers there. That is many more than I ever seen here in one show in my neighbourhood !
Last coin - a tetarteron of Alexius I, Sear 1929. I have removed the desert patina. The side of Christ is off center and his hand is visible. Big fingers...
