I'm in the same boat as a couple of the other voters ....It has to be @Al Kowsky as he's the only volunteer I haven't voted for yet...As to why...Ummmmm............ I'm sure Sicily is a place he would love to go on holiday??..And...oh of course its a nicely detailed, good quality coin.... I dont want to change any of my previous votes, I'll stick with what I've chosen Plus I think I'm the only voter for Doug in the first round maybe a bad choice but if I'm right I win!! Also would just like to say, being new to the forum, have thoroughly enjoyed this thread...Its been good fun..(Have loved some of the responses especially Ryro's)....Thanks @Curtisimo for running it..And to all the volunteers great coins! Here's a Bolskan coin.....They traded with Sicily.... Spain, Bolskan (Osca). Circa 150-100 BC. AE Unit (10.35 gm, 24mm). Obverse: Bearded head right; dolphin behind. Reverse: "BOLSKAN" in Celt-Iberian in exergue, rider on horse right, holding spear; star behind. CNH 8; SNG BM Spain 734; SNG Copenhagen 325. VF.
That is true. I'm rooting for you to sweep the board with your oddball choices. Looking at #5 again, even though I don't think it's a coin that would have tempted Doug, the photo is Doug-like. It is well lit without any white-out bright spots and it appears to have been shot against a black background rather than edited to black in post processing. Also, since my first post I have searched this board for any another victoriatus posted by Doug and found only one and this would be an upgrade, although the idea of "upgrades" (meaning getting rid of the old one) seems almost anathema to Doug . The writeup does sound Doug-like. I'm changing my wrap-up list, or rather not changing it-- sticking with my original choices for all five volunteers .
Spaniard, You're right on about "I'm sure Sicily is a place he would love to go on holiday??". Both grandparents on my mother's side were born in Sicily, & my DNA results show a 21% origin from western Sicily . Sicily is on my "bucket list" & I'd love to get there before I expire .
I like Curtismo for this coin Av 20 Asses 211-210 B.C. Sicilian mint Obv Head of Mars wearing Corinthian style helmet XX behind. Rv Eagle standing right below corn ear in exergue ROMA Crawford 72/2 1.11 grms 11 mm
My vote goes to @Parthicus because I haven't voted for him yet and I really have a good feeling about this one. Here's my coin for this round. Isn't the croc so cute? Erin
I only have one person left to vote for so my vote goes to @Parthicus. Yay process of elimination! I am at work right now so I will have to wait til this afternoon to post a coin that goes with the theme of OP's coin.
I have to admit, I did the count, the use of the word "fabric" by @dougsmit is 101 posts vs. all the rest only 20...which does raise some question about my current selections....stubbornly, sticking with my picks anyway. Whoever is the owner of Coin#2 may be interested to know that there is a double die match available for sale. PM if you want to know where.
I've decided to switch my #1 & #5 because I think Al has a fondness for nice tetrarchal folles. So my new (final?) slate-guess is: Round 1: Al Kowsky Round 2: Parthicus Round 3: Valentinian Round 4: dougsmit Round 5: Curtisimo
One more day to make your guesses folks. Do it because it’s fun, do it because all your friends are doing it, or just do it because Commodus commands it!
Guesses will be closed in a few hours and I’ll begin the drawing portion of the festivities. @dadams ... don’t let this one slip you by like round 2 my friend hmmm one final “bump” worthy coin... Oh yeah Helena... that will get the job done
Nearly let this one slip by due to being preoccupied with work matters! I've tried to keep my guesses on these consistent, so although this one makes me think of @Curtisimo, I've already guessed that another coin belonged to him: that leaves @Valentinian. Although this one may indeed look like a Curtisimo coin, and from what I can tell Valentinian does not have much interest in Republican coinage, that is surely part of the trick, right? Valentinian does dabble in Greek coins, and the description of this one draws attention to the fact that these were used to trade with the Greeks - so @Valentinian it is! Here's a ragged but neat little Republican, perhaps formerly the charm of some ancient soldier:
Okay all, the poll closed earlier today. I still need to update my spreadsheet and double check everything before the drawing so I will go ahead and leave this thread open for guesses until I am ready to conduct and post the drawing in the master thread (possibly tomorrow) That should let the few stragglers have some additional time to guess if they wish. CoinTalkers have had a bit of a busy day what with some fancy-schmancy auction going on
Holly cow!! Thanks for the reminder! This one has to be yours - I vote @Curtisimo on this one. I’ll be back with an edit in a bit but I wanted to get in under the wire. -d
Oh well - looks like I missed this one too. Syracuse, Sicily. Hieron II (275-215 BC) Edit: ↓ Thanks! I'm a straggler.
No your guess is still good my friend. Guesses will be open on this thread till the big reveal and drawing
I didn't get a chance to post my coin yesterday. I don't have anything remotely related to OP's but I DO have a coin minted in Sicily. Akragas, Sicily c425-406 BC AE Tetras Obverse: AKΡA, eagle, with head lowered, standing right on hare Reverse: crab behind / Crab, crayfish left below; three dots below crab
I’m glad I can still join in. Since the popular vote is @Curtisimo I will say this coin belongs to him since it seems like a coin he would own due to the very interesting history behind the denomination. Since I happen to like denarii and this coin is close in size here is a picture of one of my denarii.
Very good NLLI got you down. By way of an update for on this I got pulled out of town for work and have been away from my computer (been participating on my phone). I have everything I need on my flash drive so as soon as I can find a few minutes to get post up at a computer I will post the results / drawings. Thanks all and sorry for the delay.
