I Need A Clue.... Necro-Thread Hate

I see it all the time. A new member tagging his first message on to a very old thread probably just because he is lost and unsure of how to join in all this fun. And immediately one of us oldtimers will correct the new member and suggest he not bring up old threads.

Now the last few days @Johndoe2000$ has dug up some ancient threads for fun. I just received a superb education on judging Ebay coin purchases from a very informative thread started by @desertgem in 2009. I would have never received that education had @Johndoe2000$ not brought it back to life.

So why not resurrect old informative threads? It’s obvious this forum has enjoyed the membership of some superbly informed numismatists over the years and I think I am going to make some time to study some of these necro-threads myself and see if this old dog can in fact learn a few new tricks.

Randy, I don't think the newbie is being "chastised" for posting to an old thread. I think it has more to do with a member pointing out the age of the thread and the likelihood that the original posters may not even be around any more to answer them. At least, that is why I usually tell the newbie, "You do realize that this thread is old, don't you?"

I don't know if it's a good thing or bad thing or if it's frowned upon to resurrect old threads. I for one, enjoy searching old threads trying to find answers to my questions before posting the question again on a new thread.

Many (if not all) questions have already been answered over and over again. If I can find an answer to my question on an old thread, less aggravation for others.

Is there a harm of resurrecting an old thread? I'm thinking if it's a decent legitimate question that hasn't been answered, why not?

I would think many of the old timers would enjoy seeing their threads brought back to life. Although, many of the OP's who created these threads are dead or long gone.

Even if the OP is no longer here, others on the thread still may be.

It's cool to see some of the old names pop up but I also bring up that it's an old thread. A new thread will often bring more information and post.

I know you weren't, but admit it, don't you find yourself chuckling just a bit because you (eventually) discover that you've been (re-)reading a 5-year old thread?

Not as bad as I do when I am responding to the OP in a five year old thread! That too I have done.

Many of those older threads have topics, and posts that are still pertinent today.
You'll find educational, and entertaining threads if you start to look at the Necros.
Many links, and pics are no longer serviceable though.
Good to view when there's nothing going on here, or you're bored.

#1 Rule: You gotta post an entry that adds value to the thread, to justify a resurrection. ;)

I'm moving this thread to Coin Chat, for several reasons. For one the General Discussion section is for non coin related posts. For another it's an Opt In only section, meaning you have to Opt In even to see it. Another, since we have about 10 times as many guests viewing the forum as we do members, and since only members can Opt In - well all those folks would be missing out. And since it is educational, well I don't want 'em to miss out.

Some old threads deserve to be bumped because they contain knowledge, experience and valid information. Resurrection of an informative post is not droll with me, but when someone attaches a comment about his so called doubled die to an old thread that's been already hashed out, I wonder why the devil he didn't start his/her own 'new' thread. (How's that for a run-on?) devil.gif

    That's when they get necroed.......

I think many (some?) old threads are worth another look, & in fact, if CT an archive of "our" collective history, there is a wealth of information buried in here somewhere (think of it like numismatic archeology; or, put yourself in the mind of an ancients collector :D). There are many nuggets in the past.

For me, it's a double edged sword. On one hand, I get to recollect & reminisce about members who haven't been here in a while, for one reason or another. And I can see how some members have grown in their knowledge over the years (Caveat: I have been a "member" for almost 2 yrs now, and followed for about that much time prior to joining; so anything 4 yrs back & beyond is still fascinating to me).

The other hand (for me) of course is the realization that certain members are no longer here, & are missed. So it's great to see their posts again.

   ;)

The answer to that is usually fairly simple and straightforward. They do it when they first come here because they don't know anything about the forum - how to even use it let alone what it contains. And rarely do they know anything of what forum members consider proper forum etiquette. And even more rarely do they ever realize that the thread they are posting in has not been posted in for years. Why ? Because they simply don't notice the date stamps.

All they know is they were searching for something, they found a thread that contained something along those lines, so they go ahead and post there.

Now then, just about anybody who stops and thinks for a minute, can realize all that and how and why it happened. But just like the new member who post in a very old thread didn't stop and think - the established members here, well they don't stop and think about what I said above either.

So now you guys tell me - who's at more fault ? The new guy who knows nothing - or the established members who know, or should know, a lot ?

I know what my answer is, do you ? And no folks, I don't mean that in a bad way, nor am I trying to lay a guilt trip on ya. I'm simply trying to get you to stop and think. And if ya do, well, all those "scuffles" that occur so often between new members and established members - well I think most of those will simply never happen ;)
