@Parthicus Maximus, an excellent OP coin and a great pairing from @Carthago, many other nice coins in the thread so far. Here are two more to celebrate the birthday: Domitian (Caesar, 69-81), AR Denarius, Rome. Obv: CAESAR DIVI F DOMITIANVS COS VII, laureate head right. Rev: PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS, lighted altar. Ref: RIC 266 (Titus) Philippopolis, Domitian, Æ 22. A.D. 88-89. Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XIIII CENS PER P P. Radiate head right Rev: ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ, Ares standing left, holding spear and shield
I like Domitian's wry smirk: Domitian, AD 81-96. Roman AR denarius, 3.44 g, 17.2 mm, 7 h. Rome, AD 91. Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR XI (error; should read TR P XI), laureate head, right. Wow, there are some great coins of Domitian in this thread. @Parthicus Maximus , that is a great coin with a lovely portrait. If you after some other great portraits I would recommend the denarii from 84-88. There are some amazing portraits on these coins. Here are a few of my favourite portraits of Domitian.
Happy Birthday Big D. Hope no flies spoil your day Just got this guy. Haven't done my own pics yet. Domitian Denarius RIC 601 Rv Herald stg left facing low column 3.43 grms 19mm
Wow what an excellent coins @Orfew. I am now looking for a denarius from Domitian as emperor, preferably from 84-88. However, I have to plan my purchases well because my budget is limited.
That is a very nice example @Terence Cheesman. The portrait is lovely, moreover, your coin is also historic.
wow! interesting coin from the Ludi Saeculares of 88 AD - Relevant article on jstor - with a plate of coins.
Good description of the portrait The Obol is nice. The Diobol, however, is exceptional in my eyes, I have rarely seen such a beautiful provincial coin.
That is indeed a very beautiful portrait! It also looks a bit like mine. Do you think the same engravers engraved different denominations? I always thought engravers engraved a standard denomination.
