31 mm. Husam al din Yuluq Arslan, struck 596 AH = 1199/1200 AD, vasal of two Ayyubids: Al Afdal Ali and Calif al Nasir
Figure seated holding sword in right as if about to swing and holding up severed head in his left.
The reverse has a long Arabic legend.
Spengler & Sayles 36. Sayles explains many Turkoman bronze types as depicting astrological references. He writes this one is a reference to the planet Mars and "the image was prompted by planetary alignments" [at the time it was struck.]

Man, that thing is coooool! Wednesday Adams agrees. Certainly the unidentifiable/unidentified mystique adds to the spookiness of an already creepy coin. Do you remember where you got it from?...or did it just appear in your coin cabinet on a cold and stormy night???

    Thanks, Midweek Cutie!

I received the mystery "coin" in trade from a coin dealer at the New York International in 2003. He acquired it around that time, from "maybe a Bulgarian."

I suspect it is a local imitation or charm. Perhaps based on medieval Russian stuff. Does anyone have Pskov Republic denga, like https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=192310 . Those coins, with the crazy-eyed Prince Dovmont and his dragon-panther would be good for this thread.

That’s an unusual and beautiful coin or medallion. The shape of the flan reminds me of Peter the Great’s wire money.

to share this next Monster mashup!
I've wanted a Ketos monster since last year when @TIF shared hers!
It looks like only about 4 or 5 members have shared any of these over the years.
And in a fun @dougsmit thread from years back sharing these @zumbly pointed out that these may not have been made in Kindya as usually thought: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/a-monsterous-little-coin.274896/#post-2351574
    But rather Halikarnassos?!
But I'm not even sure if that is correct, as I've just found ancient pictures of the beast doing battle with another pre historic monster in ancient Japan!
