I am aware of all that and I agree with your points, but I have been buying gold from the mint for several years now and I bet that you have been buying gold a heck of a lot longer than I have and like flipping a coin - eventually you will land on tails - you have to hit a low every now and then. Well, it just seems kind of funny how the mint's prices always seem to rise or stay the same. So based on the points you made, the mint seems to (apparently) always buy when the market is high or the same which would result in their constant increase in prices or lack of downward changes. Sounds like the mint needs a different buyer.

Doug - could there be any other factors that contribute to the mint's pricing? I have my thoughts, but would like to hear yours. You have been at this a heck of a lot longer than I have so I am looking to you for answers. Please share Jedi Master. :eat:

Of course there are. What's going with gas prices ? For that matter, what's going on with the price of everything ? Just about everything increases in price all the time, so that means the mint's costs move up. The price of steel has risen something like 46% just this year alone, and that's just for basic steel. Imagine what it cost them to produce a die now compared to last year. Labor, materials, evrything is costing more all the time. The cost of the gold is just part of it.

    platinum out again

american eagle gold and platinum series out again. but the prices is higher than expected. based on market closed. gold 783.70 and platinum 867.00 per ounce. these prices should have been lower.

american eagle gold one ounce bullion uncirculated should be $939.95 instead of $1,119.95 and platinum uncirculated should be $1,049.95 instead of $1,214.95 offered by the mint.

People are speculating that the 2008 platinum unc coins will come in with a lower mintage than the 2006 coins so I looked back at the numbers for 2006 and this is what I had:

    4 coin sets 2000
    1/10 2006 w 1700

Now the last sales numbers on this for 2008 are these:

    4 coin sets 453
    1/10 2008 w 712

Since the 1/10 just sold out, I have read that hundreds of coins were purchased over the weekend. The difference between 2008 and 2006 is only about 1000 coins, and I think I read a small group of friends purchased 500 coins alone????

Just from these numbers I am not expecting 2008 to be a much lower mintage when 2006 was already extremely low. It looks to me like it will be close for these coins to 2006 but it also depends on how many sets they made for sale. If they only made 1000 sets then it could be much lower, only time will tell. But for the singles it seems they made about as many as in 2006 perhaps.

On Thursday or so the mint will give us the latest sales numbers and perhaps that will say what the real total could be. If it is higher than 2006 there may be many returns back to mint. :desk:

These should be close numbers, the 2008 are sales up to this week. I should say I did purchase some 1/10 coins over the weekend myself and will be watching for the sales numbers.
