Here are another three Wildmen from Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel Heinrich the Younger 1/2 Taler (12 Groschen) 1568 Julius 1/4 Lichttaler, with wild man carrying light 1571 Heinrich Julius 1/4 Taler 1594
Joint Issue of Heinrich the Younger of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel and Erich the Younger of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg 1/4 Taler (6 Groschen) 1555
Just picked up a couple of new ones. Neither one is particularly scarce but the 1693 has been graded MS62 by NGC. Grades in these don't usually matter to me. I got it more to compare to some lower graded pieces in my collection. NGC and others are pretty inconsistent in grading of these in my opinion. KM# 262.2 KM# 870
This will be the last one I post for a while. This is another new addition that will force me to take a break from purchasing anything for the time being. Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel Goslar Mint MB-190, DAV-9064, Welter-578 Lichttaler - Light Thaler Obverse: 6-fold shield of arms, 3 helmets above, titles of Julius Reverse: Wildman facing holding a lit candle in the right hand, tree trunk in left divides date Ruler: Julius Composition: Silver
There is a town in the Harz Mountains called Wildemann (translation = Wildman). It's near Goslar (where Chris' last coin was minted) and Clausthal-Zellerfeld. The Harz region is wildemann territory. Flag of Wildemann I spent a semester at the Technische Universität Clausthal over 30 years ago. Never saw a wildemann, however.
Well, it was unplanned but I added another piece this week. I have wanted a mining thaler for a while. This one just happens to also have a couple of wildmen Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1745IBH Zellerfeld mint, KM920, Dav-2163. A large and illustrative example commemorating the Goodness of the Lord Mine with crowned complex arms and wildmen supporters. Obverse: Crowned complex arms with wildmen supporters Obverse Legend: D • G • CAROLVS - DVX • BRVNSVIC • - LVNEB • Reverse: View of the mines Reverse Legend: DIE ERDE IST VOLL GVTE DES HERRN Reverse Inscription: DIE GRVBE / GVTE DES HERRN / KAM IN AVSBEVT / IM Q REM: date / I.B.H. Subject: Goodness of the Lord Mine Ruler: Karl I Note: Mining Thaler
That's a great coin. I need to do some more research on mining thalers. I wish I would have paid more attention to the history of the Zellerfeld mint during the semester I spent at the Universitat Clausthal-Zellerfeld. They school was famous for its mine engineering programs ( I was there for material science). Sometimes you don't recognize a great opportunity until it's gone. But I did develop an appreciation for the Wildemann and the witches of the Brocken.
Picked up a couple more at this past Sunday's Heritage sale of the "Morris Collection". I not sure who Morris is/was but they had a nice collection of pieces from all over the world. 1585 Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel Thaler Obverse: 6-fold shield of arms, 3 helmets above with 2 wildmen supporters, titles of Julius Reverse: Wildman facing holding lit candle in right hand, tree trunk in left divides date Ruler: Julius Note: Dav.#9064. Light Thaler. Composition: Silver 1655 Bruswick-Luneburg-Celle Thaler Obverse: shield of arms Reverse: Wildman tree trunk in left hand Note: Dav. #6518 Composition: Silver These 2 will arrive too late to be included in my display at the Worlds Fair of Money. Anybody attending the show please take a look at my cases. Any critiques, criticisms, etc will be accepted.
These are the pictures I took after mocking up each case in the living room. They will be cleaned up before displaying in Chicago but you will get the point.
Having seen these exact coins in hand I have to say congratulations. They are interesting and quite eye appealing. I think you will be very pleased with them!
You are correct. Just got them in the mail yesterday. Heritage usually does a good job on the photos. I almost didn't bid on the 1655 because of the glare at the "hairline". Fortunately, it was just a glare as I suspected.
I picked up both of these last month in Chicago at the ANA show. 1619 Thaler 1724 Thaler The second one appears to have been lacquered. I am in the process of trying to remove this because it has an odd look.
I just bought the 1701 today at the santa clara show. my dealer just bought it recently and saved it for me. now after seeing all your coins above, I see I have many more to look for.
