Ran across this "opportunity" and wondering if I should go for it. The problem is, I cannot figure out what it is. It's pretty rough, but I find the design interesting. It is about 18mm. I do not know the weight. Can somebody point me in the right direction? Many thanks.
That's a scarce one. Seleucus II Mint: Unknown in Asia Minor 246 to 226 BC Obvs: Head of Poseidon right, crowned with kelp. Trident behind, dotted border. Revs: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣEΛEYKOY, Nike in fast quadriga right. AE 16x19mm, 5.17g Ref: SC Ad28; HGC 9, 353 (R2)
A million thanks! I was having a heck of a time finding anything in my usual haphazard, wild-guess way of doing things. I appreciate it.
I think this coin was relatively unknown until maybe ten or so years ago. I've seen a few pop up in the last two years, a hoard from this region must have popped up recently?
I made the seller an offer he couldn't refuse and bought it. Looking at his other offerings, I don't see a hoard pattern - everything is Greek, as far as I can tell (perhaps a few Roman Provincials) and mostly common stuff, although I did get a countermarked Lysimachos (Seleucid anchor cm) last week, posted here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/bu...hos-with-seleucid-anchor.341027/#post-3574205 There are a few Seleucids here and there, and a Ptolemy something-or-other I also have my eye on. Everything has been harshly cleaned to the point of stripping away the patina, so they all have the same "look." It would be a pretty wide-ranging hoard if it all came from the same place, but anything's possible. Thanks again for your help identifying it. I have a lot to learn about Seleucids.
