I think I've done the best I can with these 2 Gallienus antoninianus' (antonini? antoniniani? Not sure what the plural is) that came in an uncleaned lot several months ago. I really like the zoological series of his. A different type of design that isn't the emperor and captives, soldiers holding spears, Mars, Aequitas, etc...(all great btw. I'm definitely not knocking them!) Unfortunately, these are in a pretty sad state and my zoo is rather pathetic. There is enough to be identifiable but not anything to really write home about (though I am writing you guys I suppose ) Gallienus (Sole Reign) AE antoninianus Rome mint Obverse: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right Reverse: LIBERO P CONS AVG, striped tigress walking left Mintmark B *This coin has a pretty interesting strike alignment. I'm not sure what it is. Maybe a quarter turn clockwise? Gallienus (Sole Reign) AE antoninianus Rome mint Obverse: IMP GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right Reverse: DIANAE CONS AVG, Doe walking right looking backwards Epsilon in exergue Someone cheer me up and post some of your Gallienus coins that are worthy enough to be in a zoo! @TIF I think you have some nice ones
I only have one. @Roman Collector, @zumbly, and others have an interesting array (Z has a criocamp... jealous ). Gallienus, sole reign CE 260-268 Antoninianus, Rome mint Obv: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right Rev: LIBERO P CONS AVG, striped tigress standing left; B in exergue Ref: RIC V 230 (Sole reign)
I'm not really sure mine is a tigress. Perhaps it's just wishful thinking and I'm not sure why I want it to be a tigress rather than lioness. Those lines could just be folds of skin and ribs. I'm going to stick with tigress though .
Very cool couple right there! Coingrats on the beginning of a great zoo!!! I posted mine a bit ago in this thread https://www.cointalk.com/threads/we...-hippocamps-and-centaurs.337881/#post-3503038 But I'll happily bust Out my 2 favs here in: Gallienus 253-268 CE AE-Antoninianus(3.13g), Roma 267-268 AD Av.: GALLIENVS AVG, Head with Radiation Crown No.r.: NEPTVNO CONS AVG/N (in the Section), Hippocampus No.r.--. RIC 245, C 667, MIR 743b. Gallienus 253-268 CE. AE antoninianus(20 mm, 2.98 g, 1 h). GallienusZoo series. Rome mint, A.D. 267/8. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head of Gallienus right / APOLLINI CONS AVG, centaur walking left, raising left front hoof and holding globe and rudder // H. RIC 164; RSC 98.
I call mine a panther and require stripes before thinking tiger. I almost sold this one a few years ago having forgotten that it was ex. John Quincy Adams. This is my better one but has neither stripes nor Presidential provenance. Of my zoo coins, this animal is the wildest: Who else has a barbarous critter?
@dougsmit is that barbarous supposed to be Gallienus? I can’t make out the inscription. Also, that is amazing that you have a coin that once belonged to John Quincy Adams! I am assuming there is a paperwork trail of sorts?
For all of its tigers and mythological creatures, Gallienus' zoo is a bit heavy on the hooved beasts ...
