Hieron II (Hiero II) was the king of Syracuse. He defeated Carthage invasion only to have to deal with the Manertinoi (265 AD). After the Mamertines allied with Rome, Hieron sided with Carthage (264 AD), making him then an enemy of Rome. Soon after, feeling eminent endless battle or defeat, Hieron managed a treaty with Rome (263 AD).

A coin that someone on coin talk helped me identify:

    RR Victoriatus.jpg

Roman Republic Anonymous, circa 211-208 BC. AR Victoriatus
    Mint: uncertain mint in Sicily
Obv: Laureate head of Jupiter to right.
Rev: ROMA Victory standing front, head to right, placing wreath on trophy.
    Size: 16 mm, 2.46 g

I had misidentified this as Crawford 70/1 and @red_spork pointed out that this is a scarce Crawford 67/1, also a Sicilian mint type but likely from a different Sicilian mint than the more common 70/1 that I thought I had.

Next Up: a coin with an interesting story
