    Back when I first started reading about this & saw it on TV;
    there were different theories about the cause of the sinking.
    I didn't know it has been decided [by whom?] the shock wave from the torpedo actually caused the Hunley to sink.

    I am going from memory here. And these days, that ain’t saying much! But this is how I recall it..

    There was lots of speculation on why this vessel sank. The torpedo that the Hunley was carrying was actually on a long rod. The Hunley was to have rammed the enemy ship then pull a lanyard to detonate the torpedo. It wasn’t until they raised the submarine that they were able to determine through modern forensics that in fact the shockwave from the detonation also dealt a fatal blow to the Hunley...... That’s the way I remember it anyways.

    I visited the superb Hunley exhibit last year when I was in Charleston, SC. They did present different possibilities for the sinking...here is a link to a nice article on the topic: www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/new-clues-about-why-confederate-submarine-hl-hunley-sank-180969724/

    Went and saw the Hunley today, recommend seeing it. Should be there another 4-5 years while they stabilize the interior of the submarine but the exterior is fully stabilized.
