    Hello All,

I have the following piece of obsolete paper money from Terre Haute, Indiana. The obverse states the following: "Will pay to bearer at the Treasurer's Office of said City - One Dollar - Subject to the provisions of an Ordinance of said City entitle "An Ordinance to provide for the current expenses of said City and declaring an emergency" approved December 2nd, 1873"

The obverse also shows a date of December 20th, 1873 and is signed by Treasurer John Paddock and Mayor A. Thomas. Also shown is a Number 1199 in the upper left.

The reverse states "City of Terre Haute - 1 - Warrant"

I have looked this up in Don Kelly's book "Obsolete Paper Money - A Guide with Prices" (2018), but was unable to find it. I have had no luck when searching online either.

Is anyone familiar with this style note, has happened to have seen this before, or would have any references with information on this? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some images of the note in question:

@Tlberg Thank you for the information.

Does anyone know of an approximate value for a piece like this? I didn’t know if there was a reference book on these types of notes. I was considering donating it to the county historical society where it was issued, but would like to know an approximate value beforehand. The corner of the note was previously torn and has shows tape repairs on the reverse. Again, any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You.

It is listed in Wendall Wolka's new book on Indiana Obsoletes. A $5.00 from the same series in nicer condition sold on Heritage for $223.50.

@lettow Thank you for the additional information. Do you have some information on the heritage auction lot that the $5 note sold in? If you could provide me with the auction or the lot number that would allow me to find it on the HA website.

    Thank You.
