Some time in the late 2000s a group of like-minded collectors on this forum coalesced to form what they called the Security Engraving Group. Members would post regular presentations on all aspects of bank note engraving; most were very educational. The group kind of dried up about 5-6 years back, after we lost key members Connor1 and RickieB. I was wondering whether there was any interest, especially from our newer CT members, in restarting this. If you do a search for "Security Engravers Group" you can bring up these old threads to get some idea of the topics we covered.
I remember the group and members Bob Conner and RickieB. What I remember most is the informative posts that peaked my interests in the subject. I contacted Gene Hessler about his book, The Engravers Line, and spoke with him for at least an hour. He has some good stories. I don’t have a lot to contribute, but love reading and learning, so consider me interested.
I certainly remember the group, and wrote a couple articles for it. It was enjoyable to have a somewhat academic flavor in a forum. Hopefully I raised a bit of interest in non-US banknotes with my submissions.
I'm not familiar with the group (I joined back in 2009 but disappeared for about 7 years when life became a bit chaotic), but I did look through the search and found this great page that has links to lists of past presentations from 2009 and 2010: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/call-for-new-membership-in-the-security-engravers-group.120917/ Seems like it was an informative and popular initiative in past years. Personally, I'm coming back to collecting paper money now with a new passion to learn more and contribute where I can. As I'm reading a few of the examples of past presentations, I'm enjoying these intelligent, academic efforts. I would be interested in being part of a revival of that spirit of learning on here (and second the idea of bringing in some non-US influences as Dave M mentioned!)
I was not around during that time period but I have read a lot of these post's. I would enjoy reading more if this group were to come together again. As far as writing or participating I would have to say no as I am intimidated with the knowledge level of you Paper collectors. So for me it is read only. I know we have all heard that term before, right? I am still trying to learn to post pictures on this forum, just can't seem to get the hang of it.
I just went back and took a look at some of those posts, its a shame that just About every original member hasent posted in years
A question for all you paper folks. Say for example you decided to collect a denomination series like the $5.00 bill. You set a goal to get 1 of each bill including a star if it was issued. There has been several (I think you call them blocks) printed ie, AxxxxxxxxA- AxxxxxxxxB- AxxxxxxxxC and so on. From 1928 to current date what do you think it would cost to assemble such a collection? Could it be done? Have any of you done this with Federal Reserve Notes? I can't even begin to afford something like that but awful curious about it. Minimum grade of 63 so how could you determine price and where the heck could you find all of these?
I remember. I saw this webpage today bc MMAT bought them and thought of the group. https://www.nanosecurity.ca/banknote-security/
I'm still here! RickieB ordered the Engraver's Line by Gene Hessler and had them inscribed for several of us, this engraving was included. Here is my RickieB owned note: RickieB was probably the only forumite I knew outside of the forum.
I'm still around, too. When anyone posts on this and a few related threads, I get an email alert and I pop in to read it. These days, the action has shifted to a forum specifically dedicated to Souvenir Cards and Security Engravings, so that's where I spend most of my time.
It would be quite a task to find all notes with a minimum grade of 63. I have this collection: Clay Irving Collection (panix.com)
I set a goal early on to get every replacement note for every district and every series for every small-size $1 FRN in uncirculated condition. I fulfilled that in 2016 and continue it to this day.
