Looking through my hoard I pulled an uncirculated roll of 1960 D large date cents. I found 4 in the roll with identical die breaks. They have one long break coming straight off the eye brow and another off the nose. I attached 4 photos of the close up of the break and one sample full size. As always, comments and corrections are welcome. 1960 D Die Break 1.jpg 1960 D Die Break 2.jpg 1960 D Die Break 3.jpg 1960 D Die Break 4.jpg 1960 D Die Break 4 Full.jpg

And how do you get identical scratches on 4 different coins?

Die Scratches from cleaning of the die.

Well thanks. Just saying 'scratches' didn't help much.

Scratches on the die makes sense to me because all the coins have minor lines that look like dies issues.

Whatever the cause, is it unusual to find so many in one roll? Keeping in mind that I got this roll at the bank in 1960. And, after it was pointed out that the scratches were on the die I understand and need to look at some other coins in my collection that may be scratches rather than cracks.

This is a very cool find. I do think they are Die scratches because they are very straight lines. Die Cracks can be be in a straight line, but usually are not so straight for their full length. It is interesting to have several coins that you can designate as coming from the same Dies. Have You check for Re-punched Mintmarks?

No, I haven't checked for RPM's. I usually have trouble deciding if they are just a bad strike or damage. I appreciate your feedback. But, I will give it a try on these.

@alurid Here are photos of the date areas. Notice that all 4 have the same line between the 6 and 0. Like you said 'very cool find'. 1960 D Die Break 1 Date.jpg 1960 D Die Break 2 Date.jpg 1960 D Die Break 3 Date.jpg 1960 D Die Break 4 Date.jpg

I inadvertently inserted the wrong photo for the date on Die Scratch 2. Attached is the date area for #2 1960 D Die Break 2 Date.jpg

    Nice photos.
The mint mark on your coins has a noticeable CCW rotation.

Does that mean they could be RPM?

No, not really. But it is a design feature the your coin has that could help identify which RPM it could be as there are 99 variety for this date size and mintmark.

Thanks, but, I'm not sure I will live long enough to sort through 99 variations. I may give it a try.

Sure looks like a die chip in Lincolns brow to me . I see the scratches but don't see that they are connected to the brow.

I guess what I meant was that they are in the same vicinity on each of the 4 coins. The lines are in identical positions on all 4 coins. That makes me believe that they are from the same scratched die.

So- the furrow down Lincolns brow is a scratch? Okay.

Not necessarily. I'm talking about the 2 straight lines going horizontal one the eyebrow area and one from the nose area. These straight lines are identical on 4 coins from the same mint roll. Plus, on each of the dates (all 4 coins) there is a diagonal straight line between the 6 and the 0. I'm trying to demonstrate that these 4 coins came from the same die. The furrow you mentioned I hadn't noticed. I will check it out. Thanks for the feedback.
