I'm looking for some PVC free coin pages for 2x2 flips, I find that a lot of items only described as "fits three ring binders", seems it is some standard in the United States. Is there any collectors from United States can tell me what is the distance between the rings of a "three ring binder"? I already have some binders at home, the distance between two adjacent rings are 10.8cm (4.25 inches). Here is the coin pages I'm looking at: Polypropylene pages: https://www.coinsupplyexpress.com/2x2-pocket-pages Vinyl pages:https://www.coinsupplyexpress.com/lead-dog-20-pocket-pages-sku-5704.html
Yes...exactly 4.25" is the distance between the middle of one ring to the middle of the adjacent ring.
Yes, I believe it is a standard, but I cannot tell you what that standard (the actual distance) is. What I can tell you is this, if you even see the word vinyl used in describing a product, you do not want that product for it has PVC in it. And you also have to be concerned about the binder itself, for with most of them the outer covering is made of vinyl - the exact thing you do not want. And with most of them the inner part is made of cardboard, and you don't want that either because almost all paper and cardboard products are harmful to your coins because it all made with sulfur. The polypropylene pages you mentioned, those should be fine. But that's only 1 part of the problem.
Thank you, first time to know this, very informative. I will think about the binder thing, but Lighthouse is too expensive. I use PVC pages for years, coins became sticky regardless they were protected by flips. Even if I replace with polypropylene pages, there will be residuals on and inside the flips, I cannot replace all flips and clean all coins. But I am going to replace all PVC pages as a first step.. good thing is coins in binders are not very precious.
Sorry to tell you this but you HAVE to replace all the flips and clean all the coins - absolutely have to ! And you need to do it quickly. The cleaning part is easy, read this and it will tell you how - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/proper-acetone-procedure.193708/ Ya see that sticky residue, it's an acid and it WILL harm your coins if it has not already done so. So follow the directions I give in that thread, and there are no shortcuts, you need to follow the directions. You can buy new flips, non PVC flips, if you still wish to use flips - http://www.jpscorner.com/coin-envelopes.html (there are other kinds out there as well) But my recommendation would be to buy Air-Tite coin holders for each coin - http://www.jpscorner.com/airtite-coin-holders.html
It must have already done harm, so I want spend no more time on these coins. What I only concern now is: if I put polluted 2x2 flips and new 2x2 flips in the same binder, in different pockets of polypropylene pages, how much will the residuals harm the new flips? I guess it is acceptable because when we talk about chemistry we have to take dose into consideration.
@Hydr My advice, and "take what you like, leave the rest:" Consider the old American adage, "Don't be penny-wise and dollar-foolish." Trying to save a little now could cost you a lot in the future. Unless these coins are not valuable to you, but generally I think we in the coin collecting community have a responsibility to preserve coinage for future generations. Steve
True. I just invested $100 on new PVC pages to replace the old PVC pages (that's foolish) and now I decided to throw them away. But I don't have time to clean all polluted coins, because I even cannot tell which coins are collected years ago and which are from last week. Another problem is, if I get a new coin in the future, I can never know if its previous owner uses PVC pages.. So the best solution is leave polluted coins as they were.
No cardboard? I have all my world coins in a ginormous cardboard binder!! GAK!! Here I thought I was being all green and stuff! Wow!! Thanks @GDJMSP
I can't speak for foreign suppliers but Bags Unlimited, here in the states, has an enormous selection of archival quality materials for every type of collectible. Very reliable company I have done business with forever it seems.
Actually I am using "cardboard 2x2 holders", shouldn't call them "flips". PVC chemicals from the coin pages permeate through the mylar in cardboard 2×2 holders.
Welcome to cointalk~ I have found this binder to be very useful, and great for coin storage~ https://www.target.com/p/2-zipper-ring-binder-purple-five-star/-/A-53735256?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&CPNG=PLA_Seasonal+Shopping&adgroup=SC_Seasonal&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=t&location=9014045&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1246978&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjL_DoNac4QIVxiCtBh1EVgbyEAQYAiABEgL2S_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds They are good quality, good price, with lots of useful storage features (also, since it can be zipped up, you don’t have to worry about losing items). Mine is identical to the one in the picture (Mead 5Star, same model), except I have the blue instead of purple. Hope this information helps you
Yes, that is what I use mine for. I have a mixture of 2x2 x 20 pocket pages, and also the 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 30 pocket pages in my binder album.
