I really enjoy these. Not the quality of most of what the US mint did but some are really nice. Feel free to post what you have.
This is a nice eagle on an old medal I received in public school - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/american-legion-school-award-treasure-in-moms-memory-box.268074/
Sometime during the Reagan administration, the President requested that a copy be made of the "Great Seal" which is imbedded in the floor of the Rotunda of the US Capitol building. The President was concerned that the surfaces of the original were being worn away by visitors constantly touching it. At the time, my brother worked at the Smithsonian Institute as a plasterer and his specialty was cornicework, ornamental plastering. This is the 32-1/2" working copy of the seal that my brother created. He would go on to create a finished copy which was then hung in the White House. To show his appreciation to my brother, President Reagan allowed him to keep this working copy which he then gave to our father who was a big fan of the President. Chris
Thank you! Geez, you're nearing your 16th anniversary (April 30) with CT, and I don't see you around that much. I hope that will change. Maybe you know some secrets about Doug, @GDJMSP , that we'd love to hear. Chris
One of ways that presidential candidates used to draw attention to their campaign medalets was to make them resenble real money. Here is a piece from the 1852 Franklin Pierce campaign that looks a bit like a $10 gold piece on the reserve. Remember than this piece looked like red copper when it was new which enhanced the illusion. And here is an 1853 $20 gold coin.
I like that eagle on that token. I just noticed today the reverse of the 2019 American Legion $5 gold coin. Since I collect eagles on coins, and I think it's cool, looks like I'm going to buy one. and I'm going to have to let the obverse grow on me though.
After our Mom & Dad passed, my brother didn't want it. I held onto it until 2008, and Christine Karstedt, VP at Stacks, suggested that I put it in their auction at the FUN Show. It didn't sell at the price she suggested, but a couple of weeks later, Christine called me and said that one of her clients was interested and would I sell it for $5,000. I agreed, and Stacks waived the seller's fee. Chris
