Germany SAXONY Joint Issue Johann Friedrich I the Magnanimous & Moritz

Saxony Jt Joh Fried & Moritz taler 1544 obv 158.jpg Saxony Jt Joh Fried & Moritz Taler 1544 rev 160.jpg

The friendship implied in this joint issue is misleading. In 1539, at the age of 18, Moritz was sent to live in Torgau with his older cousin Johann Friedrich I , Elector of Saxony. They did not get on and eventually hated each other. In 1541 Moritz succeeded his father as Duke of Saxony and Head of the Albertine Line.
When his father-in-law Philip of Hesse and Johann Friedrich formed the Protestant Schmalkaldic League against the Catholic forces led by Emperor Charles V, Moritz, although a Protestant, refused to join.

In 1546 the Emperor imposed the Imperial Ban (Reichsacht) on Johann Friedrich, making him an outlaw, considered legally dead. Anyone was allowed to rob, injure or kill him without legal consequences. Moritz fought alongside the Emperor and his brother Ferdinand in the crucial Battle of Mühlberg in 1547, when the Schmalkaldic League was defeated and Philip and Johann Friedrich captured. In order to escape being beheaded, Johann Friedrich was forced to cede the Electorate of Saxony and sizable lands to Moritz.

The collector that I sold it to provided a great write-up on Mansfeld and its thalers in the answer to my post.

Per a thread I started a couple of weeks ago I can help once this thread
gets to 1499 AD. I have coins after that date but no pics. If someone could message me I would be happy to participate.

jgenn - thank you for the interesting Mansfeld post. I had no idea the three branches built 3 castles on three sides of the same hill. It sounds like the family in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

tibor - We will need all the help we can get when (if ?) we get to 1499. Maybe the Islamists can save us.

    In the meantime

@talerman the years 1500-1502 might prove difficult but I'm sure there are quite a few members who can get you there.

Yes, after we start moving back from 1501, I predict @tibor will become the go-to guy here.

He's got dozens in the date range that few to none of us have.

I'm out of business once 1503 is reached.

@talerman You should have no problem getting to 1503.
You can use Hungarian Denars and I believe Polish Gros.
I believe that the Polish coins are larger and in better condition.

I have 1 left at 1535 and then I'm out. That is unless the coin gods smile on me.

Excellent, Chris B! That makes two 1535s. After that I have a 1531. That might be it but I shall double check. Hopefully we make it to 1535! Seems to me we've been hitting rougher and rougher rows to hoe . . . is that phrased correctly? Well, you know what I mean.

As an aside, I was at the coin show in Concord, California, today. I bought me a couple 'wildman' coins! In addition, there was a US Mint representative there who was handing out US one-cents in cellophane that contain a planchet and a 2018D cent. I could use the planchet as a wildcard if it came down to it . . . ;)

Excellent. As you know I have a hard time turning down a Wildman. Make sure you post some pictures. (maybe not on this thread) I just ordered a group of about 6 of them from Germany.
