Every year there are dozens of articles written for this site that are both interesting and hugely educational. CoinTalk has an excellent feature whereby the mods can display many of these as featured articles on the front page. However, not all articles that deserve recognition get featured and even those that do could use some extra attention to remind their authors how much the community appreciates their contributions. So what is the 2019 CT Scholar Award? My idea is to start this thread so that our members (any member) can post a link to any thread they feel displays a lot of educational interest. I will then narrow the threads down to a select few (get permission from their authors, of course) and the community at large can decide which thread is deserving of the prize and the title of 2019 CT Scholar! The prize will be a numismatic book provided by me. I will choose the book as appropriately as possible based on who the winner is. We will crown our Scholar at the beginning of December 2019. Here is a summary of the process and rules. If you see a thread you think deserves recognition, post the link to the thread here. The only guidelines for eligible threads are: The thread must have been posted in 2019. The thread should contain ancient (or medieval) numismatic content and be of educational value. In late November I will narrow down the number of threads, get permission from the thread authors to enter their threads for consideration and post a poll for the community to help determine the winner. In early December I will name our 2019 Scholar and provide him / her with a numismatic book to show the appreciation of the board. Simple as that! Let's not Forget the Educational Posts Either! In addition to the award mentioned above I wish to recognize our members who take their time to answer questions and post educational content to other members threads. If you see a post you think is worthy of recognition please post the link to this thread. When we announce our 2019 Scholar I will also select a member to receive a prize coin (TBD). Below is the process you use to post a link to a specific post in case you didn't know it. Click on the post number of the post you want a link to. The below pop up will appear. Copy the link shown in the top text box. Past this into this thread along with whose post it was (to help me make sure I have the right one). Here's to a fun 2019! This should be fun. Since joining the forum last year I've enjoyed numerous articles and also particularly well thought out individual posts. Should be a great way to feature the interesting and informative content provided by the membership.
LOVE IT! Brother, when it comes to providing scholarly posts, you're a hard contender to beat. So, I do believe I have the thread to beat right here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ancients-announcing-2019-cointalk-scholar-award.329942/ Seriously, another great idea. And I will surely be on the look out for great posts that will be under ultra close scrutinization for top honors...so that I can beat them with my thread (It was a joke folks. This is where you laugh). Thanks for all that you bring buddy.
Haha thanks man. One thing I forgot to mention is that since I will be facilitating the award and providing the prizes my threads and posts will not be eligible . If this takes off I intend to request that I be able to edit the OP through December so that I can index all the threads (and posts) that are posted here by category so that anyone can catch up on great posts they may have missed by viewing this thread throughout they year. Hopefully it will give some of the fantastic content on the board a bit more visibility so that good threads don't get buried under authenticity / attribution threads as sometimes happens (not that I have anything against those types of threads).
Another great @Curtisimo original! Even without the prizes, this would be an excellent idea. The best threads on the ancients forum are really the educational ones that you and so many other members come up with. That generous sharing of your knowledge and the time is definitely worth recognising and celebrating.
In that case, you may want to ask @GDJMSP or @lordmarcovan for indefinite editing privileges for this post.
Great idea! Why don't we test it out on threads from 2018? Then we don't have to wait a whole year to see the great threads and who wins? John
Award aside, I'd simply like to see a list of meaty threads. One of these days/months/years when I update my website I'd like to add a list of such threads.
GREATish idea Curtis The only way it could possibly be better is if your awesome posts were eligible as well, but I fully understand excepting yourself. I look forward to reading the many worthy threads this year.
I think we can start by nominating @seth77’s post on Alphonse of France he posted today: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/al...two-kings-crusader-and-peer-of-france.329959/ As for a 2018 thread @Theodosius, why not start one yourself? I’d like a nice recap!
We could do a separate thread for 2018 if there is a demand for it. Only hard part is it will be easy to forget great posts since I haven't read some of them in almost a year Where you thinking to pick a 2018 CT Scholar or just come up with a list of educational threads? With the 2019 thread I'm hoping we can capture them as we go so none of the good ones slip through the cracks. Great nomination @FitzNigel ! I was going to nominate that one if no one else did. I will add to the OP. Great write up @seth77
If we set aside the award then it couldn't possibly have come from my brain I like games too much The thought is that the OP will serve as a running list of educational threads for the year to serve as both recognition to the authors and as a means for folks to catch up on threads they might have missed. I will do the same thing next year if this gets any traction... hopefully it does! Umm... and fun Thanks Doug I might include some of my write ups in the OP list just to index them but they won't be eligible to win the Scholar award.
