Modern proof toners is certainly an area where they need work on the setup. I would bet that quarter is not that colorful without a lot of light

At this point, I think it’s clear they need to work on both their photography and their standard for MA with respect to modern proofs.

I have argued for years that so-called "True"views are garbage. There are at least a dozen photographers on CoinTalk alone that could take better and more accurate pictures than that PCGS landfill.

I take my photos with a point & shoot camera and they are better.

Not at that volume they have to do. It’s much easier when you only have a few coins here or there

Not a proof, but PROOF that PCGS is not in control. 1986 ASE PCGS AT.jpg

It really depends on the coin. I have seen some horrendous True Views that make the juiced photos of toned coins on eBay look honest. I have seen others that were spot on or that made a coin not look as nice. It is hit or miss. Like PCGS grading, the photography service is all over the place. I believe they have additional photographers and not just Phil anymore...maybe that it is part of the issue.

Glad to hear mine is a no brainer. I haven’t looked at many washies and just hadn’t seen one like this one which raised a bit of a question mark but like I said still passed my test and I bought it.

Re true views: I like them and can’t imagine them being much better considering the volume they have to shoot. They definitely can hide stuff and exaggerate stuff sometimes but it doesn’t bother me at all and 90% of my coins I feel are accurately represented

They have a standard setup and pump through tons of coins. I get it.

But every single picture they take has the same oversaturation and red-shift. You can fix that very easily and take much better pictures instantly.

They don't do it because the people that like the so-called "True"views like the juiced photos. Its like the magazines - those models don't look like that in real life, but we like to look at them anyways.

NT for the 64 Quarter if I am not too late. I did not see where we switched over to the ASE.

Saturation on that photo is WAY overdone.

Saturation of the photo is not the problem! Some people will never learn. And if that is supposed to be sarcasm, you didn't use the "sarcasm" icon.

I've never been a big fan of TruViews and can say that they are often not the best representation. I read somewhere (maybe it was here or the CU forums) that had an average eBay seller produced a TruView-like photo, then most would be bashing them for juicing the image. However, I do notice that many people like TruViews and even demand them. I've seen people send coins in just to be TruViewed (even when there is already a quality photo available). This seems to imply that people do like the glorified pictures and unless enough people stop buying into them, then we won't ever see more realistic pictures (I would prefer that PCGS did move towards more realistic images).

The crux of my argument was what you noticed. In a few segments the TPGs (especially PCGS) were really loose. Classic coins were not impacted for the most part. I've seen some borderline Peace Dollars (and may post a few more to see what others think), but the majority of the issue lies with moderns (the worst being ASEs and post 1970s proof coins). These moderns were easy targets as most of the coins had little value (spot for the Silver Eagles and under $10 for most modern proofs).

I will avoid using TruViews for future postings in this thread.
