Hey all, so I've been going through roll after roll the last few days trying to learn what to look for. So far I've found pretty much everything I needed, but there's a few things still lingering I am curious about. For instance, I stumbled upon this in a roll: What on earth could cause that inner bezel? That one was hard to try and find any information on because I kept hitting threads and other sites where people were asking about the circular damage from coin rollers. It doesn't seem like a broadstrike because it's the standard size (caliper read 19.04mm). The other thing I found was on the 2017-D where sometimes there is a fat 7. I found this thread from February and it was deemed as a worn die. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/2017-p-lincoln-cent-fat-7.311368/ Is this still the case? I find it fascinating that 2 different mints can produce the exact same effect with no other visible afflictions. I think it would be awesome to be able to say I have "2017-D Fat Date" Another one I am curious on is this. The top of the shield, the O in "One", around the E in "E Pluribus Unum", the T in "Cent", and the right edge of the banner all seem to exhibit some sort of damage. The thing is though is that this penny came from one of many 2017-D penny rolls I got from the bank. I'm assuming they were uncirculated and this is damage from the mint. Is this a copper plating issue? Finally, thanks for taking the time to look at this if you made it this far. I've just been going through rolls like mad the last week and tried to hold off my questions until I couldn't wait anymore. One last 2 part question I have is this one. I bought 2 boxes of pennies from the bank. One was 50 rolls of 2018-D pennies and the other is a combination of 2017-D rolls and random circulation rolls. If a roll comes from the bank, all the same year and mint, and look new, is that actually considered uncirculated? If it is, should I be looking to get some of these graded? Thanks again.
Uncirculated can have an arbitrary definition but yes, rolls that are straight out of the mint are considered uncirculated. Most people here would advise NOT to send in any brand new pennies for grading. To have any 2018 cent worth over face you would have to have atleast a 67+ and it is way too easy to think your coin is high grade and it turns out to be a bust and you wasted 50 dollars to grade a coin worth 1 cent. But hey maybe you'll get lucky. They don't call it Slab Roulette for nothing.
Thanks for the info. I was thinking maybe it would be one of those things you should do sooner than later, but if it's not, then I think I'd be happier just putting these in little holders for now. That's just more beer and roll money.
Glad you came to the hobby! Anyone here would be glad to answer questions you have. Welcome To Cointalk!
