Wow, that's special!! I haven't kept up with the number of these known to the market since writing this thread three years ago. I've seen perhaps ten since then and will at some point update the composite picture. Thanks for the additions, and congrats on your unusual and very cool new coin!
@ TIF: Great OP coin!!! Great write up too!! @ Ryro: Very cool coin!! Would love to have that one!! Poor 1, uneven surfaces in areas, overstruck legends, countermarked, filled with history, mystery, and a whole lot of character.
Amazing thread! As always, I come here a bit later... Mine is not countermarked: Bronze AE 26, RPC I 2994, SNG Cop 517, SNGvA 3143,12.2g, 27.5mm, Sardes mint, c. 23 - 26 A.D.; obverse DPOUSOS KAI GERMANIKOS KAISARES NEOI QEOI FILADELFOI, Drusus and Germanicus, togate, seated left on curule chairs, one holding lituus; reverse EPI ARXIEREWS ALEXANDROU KLEWNOS SARDIANOU, wreath enclosing KOINOU ASIAS.
Congrats on finding one! The unrestruck versions are harder to find than the ring die restrikes. Recently one of the best of the handful I've seen came up for auction. I bid but there were others more determined than me. Here's that coin, from Leu webauction 4, lot 504:
Thanks for all the information in this fascinating thread. Probably Pollio wanted to emphasize his imperial relations. I bought a coin of this type on an Austrian auction almost a year ago. Since then I saw several others at auctions (for less than I paid), so maybe it's not so rare after all. Still, immensely interesting. 26.5 mm, 13.75 gr.
