Here is a scarce and iconic type of Trajan. It is missing most of it´s inscriptions due to wear but still is nice in hand and features my favorite yellow Tiber tone. It is one of Trajan´s final Sestertii, for unlike an earlier variant of this type (our friend Ro has one of those) it includes his Victory title PARTHICUS which he only received in AD 116. This issue celebrates the apex of the rule of the OPTIMUS PRINCEPS, his comprehensive political settlement in the East, resulting from the success of the military campaign of AD 115, i.e. the annexion of Armenia, the invasion of Mesopotamia, and the conquest of Parthia, affecting territory as far north as the Caucasus. IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC PARTHICO PM TR P COS VI PP - Laureate bust of Trajanus right, wearing paludamentum / REGNA ADSIGNATA S C - Trajan seated left on high platform, accompanied by a lictor with fasces and another officer, handing a diadem to the first of three bearded kings, presumably those of Armenia, Mesopotamia and Parthia, who stand right before him at foot of platform, awaiting investiture. Sestertius, Rome 116 25,8 gr / 34,9 mm RIC 666, BMCRE 1043, Cohen 325, UCR 730, Sear 3190, Banti 91 (14 specimens) According to the Dictionary of Roman Coins, "the subject of this coin (...) is alike glorious to the Roman name and to Trajan himself: for that this illustrious prince, when he was in the east, gave kings not only to the Parthians but also to other nations; that he received some foreign states into alliance, confirmed treaties with others, and settled differences existing between people and people, are facts vouched by Dio, by Eutropius, and other writers." Please post your coins of Trajan´s conquests or anything related
Well, I've got my own Regna Adsignata sestertius that I posted a little while ago: And a Rex Parthia Datus sestertius: And a denarius showing a weeping Dacian:
Interesting coin, Jens, good detail left and it has your color. Here are some of my coins of Trajan which relate to his conquests and military campaigns: Sestertius, as and denarius depicting the COLVMNA TRAIA NA which shows scenes of Trajan's campaign in DACIA: As, allegedly depicting the bridge over the Danube which his troops constructed to cross the river on their way to the Dacian Campaign: Below, as show the typical Dacian swords and shield:
Trajan AE Sestertius Rome mint. Obv: IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC PM TRP COS V P P, laureate head right. Rev: SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI around, SC in exergue, arched, single-span bridge with six posts, arches at either end surmounted by statues, boat sailing left in river below. 23.80 grams. Literature RIC 569; Cohen 543: Sear 3207. This was traditionally thought to be the famous bridge across the Danube on Trajan's Dacian campaign. However, it was probably the Pons Sublicius in Rome, which had just been repaired..
Some more coins from my collection of Traian related to his military campaigns: An 'earthy' sestertius of the Emperor addressing the legions: Sestertius of Trajan placing diadem on the head of the king of the Parthians: Trajan spearing a Dacian warrior: Denarius with legionary standards:
Thank you for showing your awesome Trajans!!! They make my Sestertius look so mediocre that I ordered a new one today that is much more eye-catching. But I will keep the OP coin due to it´s historical significance, making Trajan one of the very few Romans that I will keep two coins of. I promised myself not to exceed a total of 100 ancients, but am sure you can spend a happy collector´s life on Trajan´s coinage alone... I don´t collect Denarii but that is one great coin, Eduard! I love the wind blowing into the standard on the left!
Here is a Trajan I am looking at purchasing, the specs check out weight and mm size, I tried to capture the quality in the photos but it was sort of tough. It's a RIC II 361 and they want $120 for it sorry for the pic quality *scratches head*
Wait for others to reply, but something strikes me wrong with this coin not even considering the low price. This one is for sale on Vcoins for 4X the price: https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/at...lovely_strike_and_patina_/606258/Default.aspx
Not an expert either, but I agree with Bing and Nathan Waters - that Providentia looks wrong. (Also, I like the word "aluminumey").
I agree, it doesn't look struck, like it seems too smooth and lacks flow lines on the outside of the legends.
Fake. Like others have said... fabric looks off, style is wrong, etc. Here's a match in FAC's gallery of fakes: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pos=4
yep those are nearly identical, see this is why I am here! And even as a newbie I still saw it compared with many many others and thought, "too good to be true" Thank you people!! The search continues
hi, I have this coin in my collection. How can I show a picture? It is a very nice coin, with a lot of details. peter
Chose the option "Upload a file", and when it's done you better select "full image" so everyone can enjoy your picture without having to click on it.
