Awesome!! I see this type is usually attributed to the Ambiani and dated to 60-50 BCE. That fits the Gallic war period though this usually isn't mentioned. Do you know how it has been dated to that period? Hoards, I assume?

Yes, its Ambiani, I have several good books on Celtic coinage, all the authors agree that these were struck at the time when JC legions were in Gaul. Most came from hoards in France.

We couldn't have asked for two better coins to close out our Round 2.

    Results
    #22 @panzerman - 85
    #28 @Severus Alexander - 129 Winner

The eye appeal of panzerman's beautiful stater could not be challenged. However, SA comes out ahead on the bargain and interest category to win the match.

It is also worth pointing out that we set a new participation record with this match up! We had 214 votes and at least 72 people weigh in. That's a great way to send out our Round 2 matches with a bang!

@Severus Alexander will advance to Round 3 to take on @iamtiberius in a tournament heavyweight showdown! Awesome!

Thanks for the match, @panzerman... I don't think there's much question which coin everyone would prefer to have! Wanna trade? :shy: I knew I had no chance on eye appeal so I had to go all out on historical interest and bargain. Though as I said earlier, I think you got shafted on the bargain category! Lucky me. :)

In facing a powerhouse like @iamtiberius I figure I need to come out swinging. So check out the new avatar. (Who knew meek and mild Severus Alexander was a Sith lord, eh?) :blackalien: :shame:

Um, now to see if I have any decent coins left...

Congratulations Severus Alexander! I wish you success in your next match:happy: Too bad you are not here in Orleans, we could have a beer and talk coins. I might even get you interested in World coins/ banknotes. Your coin was exceptional and you had a fantastic historical writeup!!!!!

Congratulations Severus Alexander on a great Julius Caesar coin victory, I am a bit worried we are going to give panzerman a complex and depression on why do his perfect most beautiful gold coins keep getting beaten by those darn JC coins. IMG - Copy.jpg
