    Tournament Update
Round 1 has officially come to a close. I want to give a big thank you to all of the players. I will be sending out PMs with details for Round 2 over the next few days.

Below are the results from Round 1. For the benefit of those players considering their Round 2 strategy (and for anyone else who is simply curious ;)) I have compiled a list of statistics for the matches in Round 1.

The following players will be advancing to the next round.

    @zumbly @dougsmit @Pavlos @Bing @ancientcoinguru @frankjg @Orfew @Terence Cheesman @TypeCoin971793 @Jay GT4 @Cucumbor @BenSi @TheRed @iamtiberius @panzerman @Severus Alexander

Statistical Breakdown of Round 1 Matches
Types of Coins Played in Round 1

    Metal Type

A breakdown of the metal types and the number of coins of that metal played in the first round is shown in Figure 1. See below for breakdown

    Silver – 19
    Bronze – 12
    Gold – 1

We had 9 matches where coins of two different metals faced off: 8 with silver vs bronze and 1 with silver vs gold. See below summary and Figure 1 for a detailed breakdown.

Silver – won 4 of 8 matches against bronze, tied 1. Lost 1 match to gold.

Bronze – won 3 of 8 matches against silver, tied 1.

Gold – won 1 of 1 matches against silver.

    Figure-1.jpg
Figure 1 - Coins by Metal Type

    Culture (i.e. Roman, Greek etc.)

For the purpose of these statistics I have considered Roman to include the following sub-categories; imperial, provincial, and imperatorial and republican.

Of 16 total matches 9 featured coins of different cultures that went head-to-head. The breakdown of these 9 matches is shown in Figure 2. A breakdown by win percentage is as follows (excluding ties).

    Roman: 43%

    Greek: 80%

    Chinese: 0%

    Medieval: 100%

    Phoenician: 0%

    Figure-2.jpg
Figure 2 - Breakdown of Round 1 by Culture

    Breakdown by Category

    Number of Categories Won

It is interesting to note that 1 category was enough to win a match as often as 2. Obviously winning all 3 categories would ensure a victory but that occurred in only 18.75% of matches (3 matches). There was also 1 match that resulted in a tie.

Note: The average margin of victory in all matches = 31.81 votes

    Of the matches where a winner won only 1 category;
    • 3 matches featured a tie in one of the three categories (i.e. both winner and loser won only 1 category)
    • Of the matches where a coin winning 1 category defeated a coin winning 2 categories the average margin of victory was 17.3 votes
    Of the matches where a winner won 2 categories;
    • average margin of victory = 28.33 votes
    Of the matches where a winner won 3 categories;
    • average margin of victory = 74 votes
    Figure-3.jpg
Figure 3 - Statistics of Wins Based on Number of Categories Won

    Eye Appeal

Average Margin of Victory = 26.69 Votes

Participants who won the Eye Appeal category won their match 56.25% of the time.

    Historical or Numismatic Interest

Average Margin of Victory = 28.63 Votes

Participants who won the Interest category won their match 62.5% of the time.

    Greatest Bargain

Average Margin of Victory = 19.38 Votes

Participants who won the Bargain category won their match 50% of the time.
The less expensive coin won the bargain category 87.5% of the time.
The more expensive coin won the overall match exactly 50% of the time.

    Voter Participation

Max. number of votes = 212
Min. number of votes = 155
Avg. number of votes = 178

It was noted that voter participation was not uniform across all matches. I looked at the data that I had for each match and plotted it in such a way that it can be further analysed. I looked at 3 potential causes for the variance in voter turnout and came up with the following.
    1. The number of votes tended to decrease for the matches posted later in the round.
    2. The margin of victory (i.e. close match up) seems to have had an effect but not uniformly across all matches. Smaller margin of victory sometimes corresponded to higher vote counts (such as [Poll-3] and [Poll-12]) and sometimes there seems to have been little to no effect ([Poll-14]).
    3. The number of comments posted to a thread trended very closely to the number of overall votes with spikes where there are relatively more comments and a close match up (see Figure 1)

    Figure-4.png
Figure 4 - Number of votes plotted against margin of victory and number of comments to the thread.

    Figure-5.png
Figure 5 - Number of total votes plotted against margin of victory.

    Figure-6.png
Figure 6 - Number of votes plotted against total number of comments to the thread.

There seems to be a general decrease in the number of votes per match. That may be readily explained by voters missing matches as all 16 came available. In all it seems that the threads that generate more discussion and comments are more likely to get more votes (and are just fun threads in general). In short... please feel free to comment, discuss or "bump" the matches as much as you like. It seems to lead to higher turnout and lots of fun :)

    A Few Random Statistics
    1. According to my calculations up to 4 people have chosen not to cast a vote in the "Greatest bargain" category in the poles. That means that there is a very slight advantage to targeting the other two categories.
    2. The highest number of votes for a winning coin = 130 votes
    3. The lowest number of votes for a winning coin = 81 votes
    4. The highest number of votes for a losing coin = 95 votes
    5. The lowest number of votes for a losing coin = 47 votes
    6. 11% of people are left handed
    7. Brazil makes up 47.3% of South America's land area
    8. Ice expands by approx. 9% when it freezes
    9. 95% of people who dislike Monty Python have a father that smelt of elderberries
    10. 60% of people secretly like the song Ice Ice Baby
    11. Exactly 100% of the people who have played and voted in this game are awesome!:D

Wonderful competition Curtisimo .. I was on vacation for the first week but still made sure to vote on all match ups using my phone. This certainly has kept me engaged!
Really looking forward to the next round's battles.. as a vanquished participant I can now relax, enjoy and learn.

This is obviously a lot of work and I want to personally thank you for all of your efforts.

What an epic first round that was! Thanks for compiling those interesting stats, even if they probably won’t help me in my second round match against The @dougsmit. Looking forward to it and totally intimidated at the same time!:happy:

    Well, that's "awesomely" cool @Curtisimo
Even though they are pointless, those statistics are very interesting to read :D
But I don't see anywhere a conclusion about the average age of the winner and how it influences the result :)

Now that I have read all these statistics I'm even more confused as to what I will be playing in the next round :(

Ah dang it I forgot to break it down by age, height, blood type and number of freckles on your right hand. How could I have been so neglectful

To distract you all from my malfeasance I will point out another stat that I missed. We still have players from 5 different countries active in Round 2 (by my count we had at least 8 in Round 1).

Pavlos You pick out the big men. I'll make them brave!

I am actually Greek (proud Epirote, decedent of Pyrrhus of Epirus ) but I live in the Netherlands, always hard to decide what to fill in as country.[IMG]

And I almost forget to say, thank you Curtisimo for your effort in hosting such an amazing contest! I have learned a lot so far.

    Welcome to Round 2!
We are ready to kick start the next phase of fun with our Round 2 matches. This round will see 16 participants going head to head in the hopes of being named this year’s Imperator Champion. Hopefully we will have just as much fun as we did in Round 1 :). I want to send out another big thank you to all the participants. Below is the Bracket for Round 2.

    Bracket-R2.jpg

    Tentative Schedule
    The schedule may change slightly as required but as of right now I anticipate the following;

    Thursday August 16, 2018
    #15 @Jay GT4 vs #31 @TypeCoin971793
    #17 @dougsmit vs #32 @zumbly

    Friday August 17, 2018
    #7 @BenSi vs #10 @Cucumbor
    #21 @Orfew vs #28 @Terence Cheesman

    Saturday August 18, 2018
    #4 @ancientcoinguru vs #13 @frankjg
    #8 @Bing vs #24 @Pavlos

    Sunday August 19, 2018
    #22 @panzerman vs #27 @Severus Alexander
    #14 @iamtiberius vs #30 @TheRed

Note to Participants – Changes for Round 3
Starting with Round 3 I will be throwing a bit of a curve ball at the participants. In Round 3 only coins that have not been previously played will be eligible . Since the winners of the Round 3 matches will make the winners podium it seemed reasonable to add this layer of additional challenge to the round in order to make sure we keep it strategy focused and interesting into the championship!

Looking forward to round 2. I was a bit worried that I had missed some since I hadn't seen any new rounds in awhile.
