[Ancients] It’s Time! The Second Annual Coin Imperator Tournament (2018)

I see definite World Teams forming here:
    - Team Europe
    - Team Australia
    - Team North America
    - Team Singapore
    - Any others?

I watched the Hong Kong Sevens (Rugby) several years ago when The Cook Islands took on Japan. Cook Islands have 17,000 people total population, and they roundly defeated Japan, population 127,000,000.

You NEVER know how it is going to end!

    My Underdog Coin:

When The Roman Republic was at their lowest point fighting Hannibal during the Second Punic War; After losing 10's of THOUSAND of Legionaires at the battles of Trebia, Trasemine, and then the disaster at Cannae... Rome still perservered.

This Heavy Denarius (tarriffed at 10 AE Asses) was minted during their deepest low point in Republican Rome's History. I love this coin for it represented Rome's perserverance and stamina to go on and WIN a World Empire:

I may try to predict the whole thing bracket-by-bracket but I'm going to be first to predict the overall winner:

    Zumbly!

    (no pressure, buddy :D)

Oops, I see that @Alegandron beat me to the punch.

    #TeamZumbly :D

But I will cheer for everyone. You never know who might dig deep and put together some amazing writeup.

    Yup, no pressure at all...:nailbiting:

Looking at the playing field, I seriously wouldn’t bet on me. The only thing I know for sure though is that this is going to be a ridiculous amount of fun, even if I end up sitting on the sidelines after Round 1.

I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s coins and reading all the great write-ups. And, of course, thanks to @Curtisimo for hosting the Tournament again.

    Game on, people! :)

    True, all of that.

You, @Severus Alexander, @Roman Collector, @Cucumbor, etc... so many friends, so many quality people, quality coins, quality writing.

    Of course not :D

You never know what might happen. Historic coins and good writeups could go a long way.

My experience in last year’s tournament tells me that you’re not done until the last votes are counted.

    In the meantime...

Everyone else may as well give up now. I just purchased the 8th rarest/best Athens tetradrachm in existence from eBay and am going to ride this baby all the way to the championship. It only cost me $1,000,000.00 and shipping was free! It has a complete feathered crest, earring, and necklace. You guys are all sunk!

If @zumbly chooses the new one I think he is, then he will will 9 times out of 10 for that round.

Heh--good one :D. (For those not around for it, review this thread to understand the joke: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ebay-fail.315121/)

It is really the earring that seals the deal.

While it would be great to pull out the stops with that coin, our participants’ guidelines encourage us to play coins “acquired individually”, so Mr. NB will have to stay under wraps for now ;).

That's unfortunate, but your competition can breathe easier because of that.

I'll root for Ajax --- not that it makes any difference since I won't survive the first round anyway. I admit wishing TheRed's post were not a joke since I'd like to see how many people would pick that one as the best value for the price.
Not knowing what that coin is, I find it interesting that over half of my better coins from the eligible period are also from groups and would be hard to assign a cost. In my 50+ years of collecting, I bought more in lots in 2017 than any other year. Of course my #1 favorite coin was acquired in December 2016 or the first month in the ineligible period.

I like that I'm going up against a completely different culture of coinage. Will make it interesting for sure!

Complete lack of ancient-coin-confidence has prevented me from entering:blackeye:. I'll be cheering from the sidelines though!!

Yes, Team Canada should receive bonus points because we have to carry this laggard.

Go Canada! You can do it!! (Sorry Z, gotta stick up for my compatriot.)

Yes. Earring fully on flan is all I look for in Athens tets. It is a challenge but I'm sure one will come along eventually.

Hmm... it would knock it out of the park on value, but I am thinking it would be pretty challenged on "eye appeal"... :D
