I am incredibly new at this but I am using those blue non-latex gloves, only because I’m allergic to latex, but another user suggested I use cotton gloves which will be much more comfortable and warmer! I know they have them at walmart and they are very thin so you can feel the coin like you can with the other gloves. Just a suggestion. Great people on CT!

Remember...all coins/ hammered or milled started off as FDC:cigar:
Reason most are in lesser grades today was caused by handling/ also known as circulation for legal tender. There are many modern "proofs" that are graded as "impaired" due to touching them with exposed fingers:(

Do you always have to wear gloves while holding gold/silver coins? If not when would you have to?

oooooohh! That dealer doesn't deserve to be a coin dealer! Put a negative mark on Yelp so that others won't go thru what you just went thru !

Sorry. Probably a stupid question, but would latex gloves be appropriate to hold coins??

I think there are special coin handling gloves, that seem to be made of latex. Even then, I would be carefull only to hold a coin by rim. Slabbed coins are probably best way to insure coin is never improperly handled while looking at it.Also, it prevents toning/ oxidation esp. for Silver coinage. Just look at all the coins originally issued in presentation boxes, without protective capsulation, most now are slabbed as proof 65/66/67....all where originally minted as 70s.

Hey, just a reminder for all you guys wearing cotton gloves. :(
You better wash them after each use as your filthy finger oils saturate the sweaty, smelly fingers :vomit: of your cotton gloves and do more harm o_O:wideyed::facepalm: to the edges of your precious "virgin" specimens  :hilarious::hilarious: than clean, dry fingers  w/o gloves!

And please take into consideration that the opinion above comes from a member with an extensive amount of experience with modern Mint issues! ;);)
