French morsel

    Had some ebay bucks to burn off and picked up this little french morsel.

    A common coin but decent for the type and was free thanks to the bucks.

    Billon Denier
    O: + S • M • VIENNA • (= Saint Maurice of Vienne), bearded head of St. Maurice left.
    R: MAXIMA GALL (= Greater Gaul), cross with pellets.
    Vienne mint, (1200-1250 A.D.)
    18mm
    .80g
    Roberts 5045, Poey d'Avant 4828 Plate CVI/17, Boudeau 1046.

    I've never put any eBucks towards an ancient. I have snagged a few tokens that way before.

    Nice catch (and for free !!!)
    Vienna (and Valence too) are really nearby my place : Vienna is 50 miles away and Valence less than a 100. I like to see those types from time to time, even though they're not from Dombes

    I love the portrait - he looks tonsured. Is that the case, or is something else being shown there?
