I just checked the For Sale forum, and at the top is a “Warning, You May Get Ripped Off” thread that popped up recently. GD -can you share what may have happened? I, for one, have purchased many coins thru the For Sale forum, and when selling, make it a point to inform the buyer everything I can about the coin(s)I sell, and provide updates when payment is received and when coins are shipped. It’s been a great and reliable venue for me, so you tell us what happened?

And by way of further explanation, I posted this response in a PM to another member. I will post it here for everybody to read. I get it. But the current thread on the subject is far from the first, and likely will be far from the last. I have considered for years doing what I did today - but I always stepped back from it. Well, today I decided enough was enough, that it needed to be done, so I did. And harsh ? Yes, it was fully my intention that it be harsh in order to get the message across. Maybe now folks will finally realize exactly what they are doing and its inherent risk when they readily, willingly and unknowingly enter into transactions with other forum members - people that they do not know, people who are complete and total strangers to them. For those that do know each other, trust each other, they can continue as they always have. That warning will no effect whatsoever on them. But everybody else - well, now they have been put on notice. And if a transaction goes bad then will know it's their responsibility and only theirs for agreeing to enter into that transaction to begin with.
Wow... that guy is definitely getting around... and leaving a trail reminiscent of the lowly ground slug. Sorry to hear if anyone has been negatively affected by him. He’s even reached out to pitch several coins to me... but I’d already heard about his antics in other forums and therefore, never had any intention to business with clowns like him. Everyone should be aware... because he is also known to message or email privately under the radar to try to sell coins to unsuspecting members.
I totally get the risk involved. I will say I have engaged in maybe a dozen or better purchases with CT members in the thousands of dollars in the short time I have been here. Each CT member I have dealt with has been nothing but obliging. In fact one member went out of his way to see I got three bucks back due to a digital transaction foul up..... Everything I do and every action I take is a risk. But The CT transactions I have engaged in have been nothing short of a pleasure.
This is why you never send a check, cash or Paypal gift unless you already know and trust the person you are buying from.
Your comment brings up another point. There is no forum rule that says one member cannot send a PM to another member asking if he or she would like to buy, sell, or trade. However, anytime that any member receives such a solicitation and they don't want it - all they have to do is say so. Tell the other member not send you solicitations. Then, if he continues to do so, Report the Private Message. The moderators will act on the report. The first step is they will warn the offending member to stop - if he stops, it's over with. If he does not stop further action will be taken, and depending on the circumstances of each individual case the offending member may even be banned from the forum, temporarily and or permanently, depending on what the mod judges is warranted. edited - I thought I would point out, this policy is nothing new, it has always been this way.
However, if you want buyer/seller guarantees, this might be a great reason to take the ~3% haircut from PayPal. Of course it doesn’t completely eliminate the risk, but it does address most common issues.
The discussions in this and the previously linked thread have been interesting. To me, it all boils down to buyer beware. If a price looks too good to be true then it's probably too good to be true. What we all don't want is selective censorship. Do your homework before making a purchase; especially from someone you haven't dealt with before. Have I been burned before? Heck yes. This was even after reading comments from CT members about a certain big Ebay seller of raw coins. Great pictures, alluring descriptions,... Half the gem BU+++ coins I bought came back unc details after sending them in for grading. Will I buy from them again? No way. I guess I'm like a lot of people who need a reality check now and then. Call me an idiot! I can take it; maybe...
I've yet to buy or sell on this forum but have on other forums. Many have a feedback system in the forum software so that after a transaction takes place the buyer and seller can leave feedback for one another much like eBay. I know that's not likely to be implemented here as it sounds as though the forum would rather just not be involved, but rather only act as a vessel for communication, but thought I'd point out that things like that do exist on other forums and are quite successful. edited to point out the other forums were not for coins, one I can think of right away was an archery forum.
