Just started collecting coins last week.Newbie

I just started last week. I dont know what coin to look for. he's videos helps me alot.

@Carl Phillip we share a first name. Welcome to CT. There is usually no BS here, but members do enjoy clowning around and teasing. Anything that gets you started collecting deserves kudos, but trust the word of the majority of posters here. I say that because I sometimes give my opinion and I'm only bating about 2/10...maybe 3/10 on a good day

Regardless of his persona here, BlueRidgeSilverhound on YouTube is a clown best avoided. And yes, I have taken the time to watch a number of his videos, chosen randomly, before having to come to this most regretful conclusion.

It's great if his videos helped you into the hobby, but if you wish to continue now is the time to get serious and to stop watching click bait garbage. This forum, while far from perfect, is vastly better for folks new to the hobby than any YouTube channel. At least here you have people who genuinely care about the health of the hobby and are willing to assist serious others without compensation. As an added bonus, the more knowledgeable members will almost always counter misinformation and is something that cannot be done reliably on YouTube.

Here is one of my last posts addressing some of the issues with his videos. There are a few others as well, including one in which he suggested there is a "right cloth" to use when cleaning one's coins. Anyone with even modest experience should know better than to ever suggest such a thing to newbies.

How to clean a coin guys? I need to show you that my 2015 quarter coin is cercular struck multiple times obverse and reverse.

 

Really, it's not worth the time nor effort. You do not have anything out of the ordinary there. Have you done any research or found anything similar to yours? Doubtful.

Because your coin is just dirty and damaged. Nothing special.

 

It is very easy to ruin a coin trying to clean. There are processes used to restore a coin, but Cleaning is not ok. If you are interested in learning you can use the search box, Ct has many threads on cleaning VS. Restoration. The folks who do, are experienced Numismatists.

 

In this case though, cleaning wouldn't matter because it's junk anyways.

 

Unfortunately, Carl; I have to agree with Furry here. If not already familiar with pareidolia, please look it up. It is something both perfectly natural and impacts every one of us, but almost certainly explains what you're seeing.

That said, there's no harm in knowing for sure, so if you want to try again feel free to post photos. Generally speaking it isn't wise to clean a coin and I'm unsure how you would be able to remove the staining without causing further damage, so perhaps try to re-photograph it before trying to clean it.

 

I wasn't trying to give a false hope, but only to say that there are ways of restoring coins.

 

Am I wrong in that there are ~500 of this variety graded (genuinely asking not positive how to look up varieties since they're not my thing)? If so did he really need to make a video for people to keep an eye out for a variety with 500 known out of the 824 million minted? Hey if you're happy searching for a literal one in a million coin for a few hundred dollar score keep at it!
