So here is a GTG challenge that I have not done here. I typically only do 1 coin at a time. But I've recently had a client send me a bunch of amazing coins to shoot. Most of them have been from a Toned Washington Quarter set. They are all graded by TPG's. They are all straight graded and all have some color, some more than others. Here's the challenge. Let's see if you can guess the grade and the TPG service. Some will be easy to guess on the service, others more challenging. PCGS and NGC are the only two TPG's here. Here are the only hint's you get: Some have received + grades and some have received a ★ and some may have received both. I am listing 9 coins here. Are you ready for the challenge? There will be a twist at the reveal. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
If I get a few minutes later I'll field some guesses but for now will just say those are some awesome quarters. I really like the first one for some reason, nice subtle tones
No idea about grades but the only one which looks decent to me is #5. And even that has a little tarnish and the surfaces don't look that great when I blow up the picture. The chest feathers also seems a little worn so I am guessing it is not MS.
I'm really bad at grading Washington Quarters, but here goes. I always have trouble determining an AU-58 coin from an MS coin. I won't even try to guess which ones received a star grade. 1. MS-65 2. MS-65 3. MS-65 4. MS-64+ 5. AU-58 6. MS-64+ 7. MS-64 8. AU-58 9. AU-58
Quick guesses (+ and ★ are tough to guess) - NGC 65 NGC 65 NGC 66 PCGS 66★ PCGS 66 NGC 66 NGC 67 PCGS 67★+ PCGS 66★
NGC gives out a Star for coins with great eye appeal. Eye appeal ranges from wonderfully toned to spectacular luster or in the case with proof coins as single sided DCAM. It's subjective, but the star is not given out often. PCGS does not give out stars, it's an NGC only thing.
@Beefer518 are you hedging your guesses or is the trick that some of these were crossed (so they had a PCGS grade but then got a star at NGC)?
Glad you asked! Please check this handy guide: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/post-your-ngc-stars-and-a-little-history.308504/
1. NGC MS65 2. NGC MS66 3. NGC MS66 4. PCGS MS66 5. PCGS MS66 6. NGC MS65 7. NGC MS67 8. NGC MS66 9. PCGS MS67 I didn't even bother trying figure out which ones had a + or *. I'd probably get 'em all wrong anyway.
Thanks. That's probably why I was not aware of it. I only a have a couple of NGC slabs. Most of those I have are PCGS.
Thanks for that link. I don't know how I missed that originally. I've alway's wanted a Star coin, but just don't want to pay the star premium. I have a couple coins that I want to send in in hopes of getting a star though.
Wanna help but this way over my head. Toning really needs to be graded by the higher powers. But at first glance. I'm not happy with the 38 and 50. That other one is is just way to difficult
Good for you. You "get it". I don't like to guess ANY grade from a photo, but WON'T EVEN BEGIN TO ATTEMPT IT for a toned one. If it's not in my hand, it ain't gettin' so much as an estimate from me.
