As a kid, I remember being taken to the bank several times with my parents to look at the family collection. I remember being mesmerized by all the treasure (what I now know to be mostly Morgans, silver commems, California gold issues, quarter eagles, and half eagles from around the turn of the century). This impression from my youth (especially of the gold) was one of the reasons I got into collecting as an adult.

Fast forward to about 4 years ago, I had been collecting my Franz Joseph Hungarian issues type set for some time; long enough to tell that this was a set I really wanted to pursue to completion, including majors. I found a seller on eBay who happened to have three nice NGC slabbed examples of types I needed for the set, and the prices were not unreasonable. So I pulled the trigger on all three in one purchase.

    Hungary 1899KB 20 Korona
    0.900 6.78g 21mm Lettered Edge

Seeing them in hand I really got the gold bug, and just a week or two after I bought my first raw gold coin from bkozak33 (Nice Common Coins) here on CT. I conserved the coin and it became my first gold submission to NGC.

    Hungary 1868GYF 1 Dukát
    0.986 3.49g 20mm Reeded Edge

These coins were also some of the first coins I photographed when I started getting into macro photography. Now I've got quite a collection of Hungarian gold issues and gold restrikes built up, as well as US gold.

I've seen and admired your stuff over on CollectiveCoin. Every time a nice Hungarian coin appears in the new additions over there, I immediately know whose it is even before I click on it.

Ha! Thanks. I think most of my new additions don't populate anymore, with the exception of medals and duplicates. I added placeholders for all of the holes in my sets. As the placeholders don't have photos they don't appear in new additions, and once I fill the holes and add photos, they appear in new additions chronologically based on when I created the placeholder, not at the top. I do have a collection on there called "Hungarian gold" though, just for the majors.

...and my first post about me.

I have never owned a gold coin. I got hooked on the collecting bug last fall and managed to hook my son (10 years old) along for the ride. My father gave me a few old Morgans, Peace dollars, and barber dimes that my grandfather had given to him. They were common coins, but cool enough for us to want to learn the history behind them. We have listened to the wise - "buy the book before the coin" - so I've purchased more books than I have coins right now. We go to the local coin shows (mostly to look at coins) and are having a lot of fun!

I must add that I've learned a lot on this forum over the past few months. I haven't posted any questions before, because I am able to find all of my answers in older posts.

    Thanks for the giveaway lordm!

I once owned a type set of Mexican gold coins and gave them away in the early seventies. I own the gold coin that you are giving away. If I win it please pass to another member and substitute a lower prize which I don't currently own but could use for my Indian States type set. thank so much.

I'm not entering. I just like to show off my coin! ;)

My first, and only, gold coin was purchased from a member here on CT in 2016. It is from India, but not as old as the one you're offering. I don't collect Indian coins, but it was gold and was within my budget.

I entered graduate school in 1967 and satisfied my coin collecting urges by subscribing to a service called First Coinvestors, through which I bought my 1794 United States cent. I made quite a few purchases through them and they started to send me bonuses in the form of Mexican 2 peso gold coins (1945). I ended up with six of them. A few years ago my sister saw them and thought they were "cute" so I gave her a couple of them to have made into earrings.

Entry post. I related this story on here before. I found a double eagle when I was about 16 years old, while sweeping the floor in a store where I worked. It was quite worn, the date could not be seen. I carried it in my pocket for a couple days and then it disappeared. Maybe fell into a black hole? I don't know. The first gold coin I ever bought was a George V sovereign I bought in Baltimore in about 1975 or 76, when ever it was that it became legal for US citizens to own gold bullion again. Within a few months I got broke and sold it.

I do not really collect gold coins, but I bought a 14k or 18k gold 0.50 gram coin for about $2 or $3 above spot price mostly because I wanted a gold coin but not a crazy expensive one - I spent $15.xx (I don't remember the exact number of cents lol) for it.

Also I am curious about these TINY coins, are they tiny because of age and being warn out/environment damage? It's really hard for me to understand paying for items (at that time period) with such tiny coins.

Well, this posting has prompted me to go on e-bay and put in a bid on a fanam. I bought another one a couple of years ago and had a loop soldered on for my daughter's mother-in-law could use it as a charm.

The first gold coin I ever bought myself was a 1945 Dos Pesos which I sold at the end of 2011 at a very nice profit, no pic. The classic 1836 gold $2.50 in the pics, I won in a contest right here on CoinTalk. That contest was given by the Lost Dutch Man, rare coins, if memory serves me right, his name is Matt! Thanks again Matt! And thanks to you LordM for the contest!! thumbupp.gif in1836dex.jpg i1836revndex.jpg thumbupp.gif

As it happens, I bought a Mysore fanam of Tipu Sultan from the Patan mint myself, earlier this year. It just returned from PCGS. To my surprise, they just graded it MS62. I haven't got it back in hand yet, to see how it looks in the holder- it's waiting at the post office.

Their age has nothing to do with the tininess. It does seem hard to imagine their practicality, being so small, but considering some of the other strange stuff that has been used as money in the world in the past 25 centuries or so, a teen-tiny little gold coin is not that surprising.

    Wow, kudos to Lost Dutchman!

The only Classic Head quarter-eagle I've owned was this "holey" example on my old "Holey Gold Hat" you see in my avatar. (Also had two unholed Classic Head half-eagles at various times over the years. They're a neat type.)
