Hello everyone, I am new to coin collecting...as in a few days new. I started by just wanting to organize all of my world coins and began to find interesting things. I am now looking into my USD change and i came across something interesting in this 2017 p Dime. In the obverse side of this dime just above the ear there is a dollop of excess metal. I am not sure if i would call it a curd as it just looks like it was placed there almost as if molten metal dripped on there. Anyways, i compared it with 6 other 2017 p Dimes and i have not seen it any of them. I also looked online for images and have yet to see one there too. What do you guys/gals think?
It is a minor die chip and there is another at the corner of the mouth. This is very common on newer dimes, especially from Philadelphia, where they work the dies way past their useful life. Check for others on the reverse also, within the leaves and sometimes at the torch base. It does not hold any value above face, but by all means, if you like it, keep it.
I keep them, Die breaks and die cracks are fun. I am gonna photo a 2017D Nickel with a small Die Chip on the reverse, and start a thread. Because there is more going on than just a small "die chip". Edit it is a 2016D
Definitely something going on. I just found a 2016 P Dime with similar issues too. The red arrows point to cuds but the one in yellow points to a perfect circle with a cud right in the exact center. This is fun stuff!!!
As the die wears, the high points are the first to brake down, because of stress of the pressures in striking the plainchant. Think of the direction of the metal flow during striking.
That part i get regarding a cud but the circle itself is deeper than the rest not raised, only the cud is raised. Maybe i didn't explain the circle well enough, what i see is a depressed circle where in the center of the circle there is a raised cud.
