@dougsmit I really like that Pius and Aurelius. Ever since you mentioned one of these I have been looking for an example that "spoke" to me.
I'll throw three bronzes onto the pile. Nice youthful portrait on a provincial from Philippopolis. Age 52. 'Rain Miracle' Sestertius showing the Temple of Mercury on the reverse. Consecratio Sestertius. Posthumous issue struck under Commodus.
OK, so this one doesn't look like much, but I was there when it was found. One of my colleagues found it on November 1, 2013, during my very first hour in the field on my England detecting trip. We were out in farm fields near the site of a medieval abbey in Essex, UK. Unfortunately the edges of the coin are badly chipped and corroded, but it's got a nice portrait, and considering how rough a lot of stuff looks when it comes out of the soil after centuries in well-ploughed fields, this was pretty decent. And of course a sestertius is much bigger than the later Roman bronzes that are usually found. It was, needless to say, very exciting for me to see. Not many things like this come out of the old parks in my Georgia town! (Strangely, however, my one Roman coin find did come up in Georgia. I dug some medieval items in England, but no ancients.) Here's the field where the Marcus Aurelius sestertius was found. Our group leader found a gold 18th century thimble out there later. I found a 1916 George V halfpenny (a much more humble find, but still fun). I also dug an 18th century flat button which had me thinking it was a Roman coin at first, until I saw the remnants of the shank on the back of it. Here's the gold thimble Louisiana Sal found.
Lovely patina on that sestertius, arnoldoe. Congratulations. Here some of my coins of M.A to add to the many beautiful examples shown this thread: Marcus Aurelius Sestertius - Felicitas Marcus Aurelius As - Liberalitas Marcus Aurelius denarius - Mars Marcus Aurelius denarius - Genius sacrificing over altar (scarce coin with draped bust)
Very nice coins. I've been into Marcus Aurelius a lot lately. I don't have any coins featuring him or even a copy of Meditations, but I've been reading about him and watching videos of lectures about him for the last few weeks.
I missed this post last year and had reason to browse the thread today. Doug, I love this coin!! Not even on your top 99 1/2, huh? Let me know if you ever get rid of it. Preferably not in the next half year since I have to recover from January's coin purchases Page 84 is MA's nomes coinage. Your coin is listed on p. 82. Emmett 1890, Nike standing right, holds trophy. It's only listed for year 18 (R5). However, RPC shows a clear example (RPC 15699, temp) and it is year 8. I wonder if the Emmett listing of year 18 was just a typo or entry error, with the only examples being year 8. Unlisted in Dattari, unlisted in Savio. Apologies if this question had already been resolved.
