Hi all, I wanted to share this interesting $1.00 Bill I purchased. I say interesting because it looks to have a Thumbprint on Washington's Face! Now, I am not saying that this is some big BEP error or something with a high premium (I only paid $10.00 for this bill) but it could make an interesting conversation piece It was certified by PMG but not as an error. But it does have a sticky note attached to the face stating from the PMG grader that the Thumbprint may or may not happened at the BEP... Dirty Inky hands? What do you think about it?
If I was grading it I would say, from your photos, that the thumb print was applied after the fact. The ink looks different to me than BEP ink. Hope I'm wrong.
for a wile at my local banks, they wanted thumb prints on checks cashed if you were not a account holder there. I would smudge mine on bills to fill in the cracks prior to leaving it on the check.
The most astonishing thing is that it perfectly matches George Washington's own left thumbprint. Woo woo. Mulder and Scully, call your office.
Considering the placement, I think it happened after. I am sure very expensive analysis could determine if it is BEP ink, or not. But no offense, the note is not worth putting more into it. Do they wear latex gloves at BEP?
When I first saw this thread, I started thinking of the different scenarios possible for the thumb print. BEP employee, Wells Fargo employee, Where’s George member, virtually anyone with a black ink pad and a thumb. I believe we all agree the thumb print occurred after the note was printed, which alone adds no value to the note. If the thumb print was placed on the note prior to the BEP, then you’d have something special. Otherwise, it’s all speculation about who and when.
If only you knew a person in law enforcement that could run the finger print for you, then you could see if in 1977, this person was employed at the BEP or a bank
Interesting. I have a silver Ike with a bigfoot-sized thumprint on it, but I have to say I've never seen a bill with a thumprint on it.
i agree for $10 its a no brainier for purchase, a conversation piece for sure but i think someone was just trying to be funny, as it would be odd for someone at the mint to touch the note there on the face in that fashion so for me PMD or PTPD...LOL
@mpcusa & Steve Exactly.. I just wanted to show something interesting.. Something besides dumb threads such as "How much is my '666' serial number worth?" Well I can safely say that the PMG sticky note is original.. How many of those are ever seen!
It's interesting that they graded this note with the fingerprint. But not determining error/ post smudge is disappointing even lazy on their part. If the workers are supposed to wear latex gloves, how could this have happened at BEP?
