If you're fond of color you could always go this route, and who doesn't like lions ? Especially on Proof coins







And let's not leave the Netherlands out, for sheer beauty designs like this just can't be beat !







Or maybe kids - who doesn't like kids !






And last but not least, wellllllllll - where would the world be without ducats ! Especially when the same design has been used for almost 450 years and is still being used today !





Now throw history on top of all of that !!!

Here, how about this? I posted this in another thread today, but it dawned on me that this is the perfect example of how far one's budget can go on the "Dark Side".

This tiny silver obol from Miletos (or Miletus) in Ionia was 26 bucks well spent. I spent more on the slabbing fees than on the coin itself!

(Granted, I got a good deal, but you can find stuff like this under a hundred bucks without too much difficulty.)

It's also one of the earliest coins I've owned.



Let's see ... what to buy for 26 bucks? A 2,500+ year-old silver coin with a roaring lion on it and a cool punchmark, from the very dawn of coinage ... or another Kennedy half, Ike dollar, or common Morgan?

For me, the answer to such a question is obvious.

Don't get me wrong- I've got nothing against common US coins like Morgan dollars (aside from the fact that you see them all the time). But something like that archaic lion coin... for the same money? Ha! That's a no-brainer.
