I'm more of gold bullion coin kind of guy. However, it's become a little bit boring. I am considering buying some pre-33 American circulated gold coins for bullion. I am not interested in numismatic premiums. What do knowledgeable forum members in this area recommend for the best pre-33 gold buys for bullion purposes? Unfortunately, I have found premiums often a tad too high on JMBullion, Provident, and Apmex relative to what their buy back prices are for those same coins.
The bigger the coin, the lower the premium. So you can get $20 coins for the closest to melt usually.
Sorry that you're bored. Unfortunately, entertainment generally costs money . . . It's not much different with interesting coins.
That's why I buy foreign gold, like British Sovereigns and other coins in the 1/8 to 1/4 oz. range. They have a historical background - usually pre-WWI - and the buy/sell spread is very small - 2% is normal, or less. And you get coins in AU-Unc. condition.
I like the historical aspect of the older coins, which makes them more entertaining for history buffs like me. I also like Finn's perspective about foreign gold as well. Sovereigns are a good one because of the longevity and consistency of them. Frequently I find a dealer selling them fairly close to spot, and can choose from a variety of years. (Not uncommon to find queen Victoria sovereigns at the same price.) Also, for some reason I dig old Cuban gold too. Old foreign gold seems to fetch smaller premiums and easiest to get for spot or near spot around here.
This is the way to go... $20 common gold can sell close to melt. I've picked some up for as little as $25 over spot. Like these commons.
Premiums are at an all time low right now on pre 33. My lcs offers xfs, au, and even certified ms60s for $5 to $20 above melt. Grab them if you can.
