If one wants it now, then it’s not too big of a deal. However, I think we’ll see $10 less than the current $45 within a month and nowhere near as long as 1-2 years. MCM and other dealers have been doing Black Friday sales the past few years and this seems like the perfect item for them to discount in order to move stock.
That's certainly an interesting approach. You may be right about that. Like you I was never on board with this being anything that special. That could be a good strategy to wait and see if it is and if not nothing is really lost. Only objection I would have though is I have always had the belief that time has a value in the sense that I would be willing to over pay 10 bucks for a couple extra months if I really wanted something. If I wasn't crazy about something though I would wait
I agree if someone really liked it or wanted one for their collection, then paying a premium for it is perfectly fine if you have the money. Personally I like the coin but it isn’t a must have, so I’m willing to wait and see if it comes down in price.
It appears the cheapest raw version on eBay right now (including shipping) is $42.99. Guess I’m a temporary genius for buying mine on eBay for $37.99 about five weeks ago. What I can’t figure is whether this is a true bullion coin or a collector’s coin. 1 million is big for a new collectible but pales in comparison to, say, the ASE’s. Right now, it’s sort of a hybrid, IMHO.
In my opinion it will always be a hybrid, I just don't think it will ever be an elite one justifying huge premiums
I would think that prices might stabilize in the $30-$40 range but I would still doubt it would become a rarity with a mintage of 1,000,000. I am also thinking that they will continue making these in 2018 as there is demand. There is nothing official, but someone did post this thread here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/confirmed-2018-silver-krugerrand-are-on-the-cards.301986/ and the associated article: https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/companies/mining/2017-08-17-krugerrand-maker-seeks-silver-lining/
"The Silver Premium Uncirculated is an even more affordable choice to the Proof, but still enjoys the benefits of being a once off coin produced as part of the greater 50th anniversary celebrations. This is the first and only time a Krugerrand is issued in silver" Same with Platinum. http://www.samint.co.za/collectable-coins/2017-range-old/ The only thing in that article is that the refinery "hopes" they can convince the mint to do it. I highly doubt they will since they have said in several places that they wont. Plus the one million mintage is a maximum, good possibility they will mint to order. Which may end up well below that number...
While not the cheapest price (I have seen $35 last month), this is the lowest now and the lowest that MCM has discounted their stock. Priced at $39.95 on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2017-South...d=382258290608&_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042
Not trying to be a party pooper but MCM sent everything they had to be graded. What's left over is in their sale bin. At $40 bucks a pop I want mine fresh from the mint...
@5d Maybe this will get you salivating. Just picked up another mint sealed bag of 25 silver Krugs that came out of a monster box of 250.
I agree that MCM's raw coins may be the examples that didn't grade 69 or 70. I was just keeping the thread updated with prices. If MCM was selling these at $25-$30, I likely would pick 1 up, but their current price combined with potential quality issues isn't for me.
I've been mainly in the suburbs but have spent stints in Roger's Park and Hyde Park. As a Chicago sports fan, the Blackhawks are my only hope for a deep playoff run now that baseball season is over.
