AWESOME capture! I would had done the SAME. This is one of my favorite Reverse THEMEs, that also I love in the Marsic Confederation's version. I had a similar experience and 'twas a hefty price for this modest example: Marsic Confederation denarius 90-88 BCE Italia-Corfinium Oath Ceremony over pig Sear 227 SCARCE I would had DEEPLY regretted missing this opportunity!
I realize I keep posting this coin when it applies to relevant threads, but I paid quite dearly for this one. Sure, one can get an example for maybe less than half what I paid, but the photo does it no justice. It is truly magnificent in hand, darker, more toned, with glossy highlights (which cant be captured properly with a camera), and that is exactly why I bought it. Also, it 'feels' very nice in hand. Hard to explain, but coins also have a touch aspect to them as well.
it's a nice tet.. how ironic you max bid was just enough.. increments? idk.. enjoy the coin, it's a very nice one!
I recommend these henceforth be known as 'Q3Q'. This thread has more than its share of words to heed! I did not quote them all above. The big point is that it is your collection and your money. If you are buying for resale, frankly I don't care how you did BUT if you saw a coin that begged you to be a long term part of your family and 'Q's three qualifiers' approved, then, I am happy for you. Would I have paid that for that coin? Certainly not, it is not something I find interesting and, conversely, I would not expect you to be willing to buy any of the coins I have paid $600+ for in my life. My interests are mine; yours are yours. IF I were interested in that coin, I probably would feel driven to get a matching B coin from Tarsos using local types rather than the Alexandrine ones. https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=303255 https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=253458 That 'chain' of wants is what makes this hobby expensive. The above is what drives me to overspend. The one I show too often is my Julia Domna tetradrachm showing Caracalla and Geta shaking hands and dated within a few months of Geta's murder. I say it is the only coin issued after Septimius died that shows both boys. I say I will not have another chance to buy a similar coin in what lifetime remains for me. I will be surprised when you show me others but I would love to see others if you know of them. Would I buy another? Maybe? Would I be interested in buying the one Alexandrian tet of Geta dated LK (Septimius died in year 19)? Guess.
Before I get caught up with other things and this thread goes into semi-obscurity, I wanted to once again thank all who contributed. I Loved ALL the comments and coin posts both pro and con. I would not expect everyone to agree the OP was worth the cost but I was pleasantly surprised so many seemed to think it was worth my final expense. Most are aware I recently purchased an immediate predecessor----a Cilician stater of Baaltar---- so I had an additional reason why I just had to have that particular tet . Personally, I didn't see one posted coin that I wouldn't have loved to call my own
Well, it's a great looking coin with a great history MZ..you're not going to regret it. "It's better to regret what you have done that what you have't." applies to things like this pretty well usually. There are a few times I've put in bid on a coin and actually thought a few seconds after my bid, "Holly crap! If I win this, I'm in SO MUCH trouble". I lost them and was actually a bit relieved....but now I wish I had bid a bit more.
I paid $720 for this; including buyer's fee. It's the most I've spent on an Alexander/In the name of tet. Herakles' eye caught mein own. SELEUCID KINGDOM. Seleucus I Nicator (312-281 BC). AR tetradrachm (27mm, 17.12 gm, 9h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5. Seleuceia on the Tigris, ca. 300-281 BC. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion-skin headdress / ΣEΛEYKOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; monograms in left field and below throne. SC 117.1c. HGC 9, 12i. - Michael
I was planning on bidding on this coin but I got caught up at work and simply forgot. I think it's an excellent coin and worth the closing price. In hindsight I don't know what I would have bid but I'm glad I didn't drive the price up any higher for you!
Mikey Zee, you explained so eloquently what many of us have felt when possibly paying "too much" for a coin. Sometimes "too much" happens to be just enough, and then we get the joy of owning a special coin we really wanted. As I often say about coins and the buying of them, "Its only money".
Sorry I'm late to the party! That's a beautiful coin in excellent style. Being among the first issues of Alexander III it also has a fascinating and specific story to tell. Those are just the kind of coins I like the best. I would have paid $600+ for it.
As someone who paid good cash for AE4s of Majorian and Libius Severus, I know this feeling! In case you hadn't seen these, your coin had a previous outing earlier this year (too bad you didn't catch it that time!), and also in 2011. And I think you had most excellent reasons for paying a premium!
