I currently have several coins, and I have noticed a need to find a nice place to store them, hopefully something <$50. What would you suggest?
Perhaps a safe deposit box? If you search the word storage in thethis ancient forum, you will find a few threads describing how folks store their ancient collections. Here is one such thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/how-do-you-store-your-collection.290220/page-3
I use to storage my coins in paper envelopes with full description and references. Or in coin holders Leuchtturm made with acetate. I avoid to use PVC flips due the risk to metal reaction (specially bronze or copper) with the plastic. Some coins are in saflips, but usually for a few time. And then, in boxes by theme (roman, Greek/ancient, medieval, etc.).
I use archival 2x2 paper envelopes stored in double row cardboard boxes. The clear flips you see are actually PVC-free flips that dealers sent coins in that I've cut in half to store all provenance info(old collection tags, dealer tags, etc.). I plan to separate all the provenance info soon and keep those at home to save space in my safe deposit box but for now they're stored alongside the coins. As a collector of bronzes, I also keep plenty of dessicants in my coin box and change them out regularly with recharged packets. They're a cheap way to help avoid bronze disease especially if you live in a humid environment. For me, living in dry-as-a-desert Colorado, they're more peace of mind than anything and probably not strictly necessary. As far as costs: 500 envelopes is about $15 at my LCS and these double row boxes are about $5 each. A single row of a 14" box probably holds ~100 denarii in envelopes and with my mixture of bronze and silver ~70-80 coins so it is a very economical storage solution.
I keep my coins in 2 x 2 cardboard/mylar holders. I keep the holders in plastic 3-hole punch slide holders that I keep in different 3-ring binders, arranged according date or theme.
Did you just start this storage process? I think it is a great idea if you are showing them in a classroom/public environment.
Thanks Brian. Yes I just started this form of storage in the last few weeks. I intend to show them them in several classes this term, and I thought this would give good access to the coins as well as keep them protected.
