Got myself another cool Carthage Horsey coin! This was struck during the 2nd Punic War with Rome, where Carthage occupies Akragas, Sicily... You have some epic Punic coins Brian. Congrats! Unfortunately I don't have a relevant type to share though.
Interesting coin, @Alegandron! It has a hasty appearance fitting with the situation at that time. There are many coins of the Carthage era I'd love to have. The two I already have are pretty special SICILY, Entella. Beautiful coin, Alegandron! I need to add some Carthaginian coins to my collection. This Numidian is the closest that I have now.
Nice coins all. Here's a plain old horse: MACEDONIAN KINDOM Perdikkas II AR Light Tetrobol 454-413 B.C. Here's a Punic Horse: SICULO PUNIC, SICILY, Entella. AR Tetradrachm. 300-289 B.C.
Congrats Brian!! The more I view that half shekal, the more I like it After so many wonderful posts I'm not sure what to share.... Ok, how about two provincial bonzes from Troas with horse reverses---- and obverses of Tyche and Gallienus??
Since ancient horses weren't specified, I'll pile on two more from the Eclectic Box. No doubt they've been seen before (there's the downside of my having such a small collection), but I still enjoy posting them. Tell me the hoss on this first one doesn't look like some sinister, vampiric creature! Though reasonably priced, this coin seems to be a crowd-pleaser, and I'm pretty fond of it. (I can't afford the full thaler, but @Zohar444 has a killer example.) German States (Teutonic Order): silver 1/4-thaler of Grand Master Maximilian of Austria, ca. 1615 This Vickie half-sov might not be an ancient, but the Pistrucci "St. George" design on the reverse definitely has Classical allusions. Great Britain: gold half-sovereign of Queen Victoria, 1901, from the Terner Collection
@Collect89 Your Entella and the first piece @TIF posted really knocked me back in my chair. They're stunners.
You should ask your local museum if they'd let you do a small display on Carthage and the Punic wars! Great stuff, as always.
Thank you. I am fascinated by the supreme sacrifices and virtual decimation of Rome during the 2nd Punic War. The loss that Rome endured was epic. Collecting Carthage, an Empire rendered extinct later by Rome is a fitting recording of that incredible saga in Human History. I just enjoy it! LOL, and I STILL have to get that incredible Punic Tet that @TIF just snared!!!
